The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team captured their fourth consecutive Elk County Girls’ Holiday Basketball Tournament championship last night with a 52-36 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders in the title game at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
After a close first half which saw the score tied at 20 following the first 16 minutes, the Lady Dutch went on a 12-2 run in the first four minutes of the second half to open a 10-point lead. The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Crusaders 32-16 in the second half.
In acknowledging that his team had to work for the title, St. Marys coach Bob Swanson said, “We came out in the second half and played great defense. Another key was our rebounding in the second half.
“Kayla Hoohuli had 10 rebounds and eight assists in hitting the open person, along with three blocks. Mandy Gerarge had five steals and four blocks and Adair Gennocro had five steals.
“In the second half we executed offensively and took care of the ball. We are a multi-offensive team but overall it was our defensive effort that won it for us.”

Karly Carnovale led ECC with 10 points on two twos and two threes. Abbi Petrosky, Lexie Meholic and Taylor DaCanal each added six points.
“I think we took a step in the right direction tonight. We played a solid first half and our game plan was to stop Kayla (Hoohuli),” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
“St. Marys is comfortable playing with a lead. Near the end of the first half and early in the second they began to take control. Obviously at the end it kinda got away from us.
