While large crowds of area residents turned out to watch the action during last week's Elk County Holiday Tournament, many also took the time to contribute to the effort to raise money for the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
According to Roben Daghir, American Cancer Society outreach volunteer, a total of $766 was raised throughout the tournament. All of the money will go to the American Cancer Society and will benefit individuals within the county.
Fans also had the opportunity to made a donation for a chance to win one of two autographed basketballs, one signed by the girls' varsity players and coaches from all four county schools, and the other signed by all of the boys' varsity players and coaches.
Both basketballs were given away during the respective girls' and boys' championship games on Thursday evening. The winner of the girls' ball was Bob Bauer and the winner of the boys' ball was Tom Werner.
"The coaches were in agreement that we should try to do the same thing next year. They all liked signing the ball and all of the [fans] wanted a chance at winning the ball," Daghir said. "We're going to do two years in a row with that and see how we do next year."
