A pin by Kevin Hoy at 285 pounds gave the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestlers a hard-fought 39-36 victory over the DuBois Area Beavers last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
Hoy, along with fellow senior Jimmy Antonelli, gave the Dutch the victory when they both recorded pins in the final two bouts of the night as St. Marys trailed 36-27 after the 189-pound match.
“That’s what makes high school wrestling great,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “That was a great match from a fan’s perspective.
“That was a big win for us. We did just what we needed to do. I feel we can do better yet and I think we will see each other (DuBois) again and that will be a fun match.
“I am proud of the kids. They needed to step up against a team like DuBois.”
The night started at 103 pounds, where DuBois’ Bryce Swager pinned Damien Wensel at the 3:48 mark of their match. Dutchman Trenton Bowers won by forfeit at 112 to even the match at 6-all.
Dutchman Evan Smith made the score 12-6 when he pinned Mark Marshall at the 36-second mark of their 119-pound match. At 125 pounds, Garrett Brown of the Beavers pinned Alex Coudriet at the 4:26 mark of their match. DuBois took the 17-12 lead when Matt Busatto recorded a 17-2 technical fall over Bill Gabor at 130 pounds. Tom Sleigh of the Beavers pinned Darren Lyon at the 2:47 mark of their 135-pound match.
Alex Feldbauer recorded a pin at the 2:21 mark over Dylan Zimmerman at 140 pounds to cut the DuBois lead to 23-18.
“Alex Feldbauer was a late addition to the lineup and did a heck of a job at 140 pounds,” Surra said.
Allan Gursky of the Dutch evened the team score at 23-all when he recorded a 15-0 technical fall over Zane Drum at the 5:01 mark of their 145 pound match.
DuBois took a 29-23 lead when DuBois’ Geno Morelli pinned Josh Cameroni at the 1:50 mark of their 152-pound match.
Dutchman Michael Brennen cut the DuBois lead to 29-27 with a 20-9 major decision over Shane Marshall at 160 pounds. Mike Kennelly of the Beavers decisioned Kyle Wolfel by a 6-4 score at 171 pounds, giving DuBois the 32-27 lead. At 189 pounds, Landon Hanna of the Beavers made the score 36-27 when he recorded a 14-5 major decision over Joe McLaughlin.
At 215 pounds, Antonelli pinned Austin Barry at the 5:26 mark, cutting DuBois’ lead to 36-33. At 285 pounds, Hoy pinned Nathan Petitti at the 2:38 mark of their match to give the Dutch the come from behind 39-36 victory.
“The two seniors stepped it up tonight at 215 (Antonelli) and 285 (Hoy). They were in pressure cookers tonight and they responded,” Surra said.
In a varsity exhibition match, Dutchman Ben Cheatle won an 8-7 decision on a last-second takedown over DuBois’ Michael Redd in a 171-pound match.
St. Marys, now 4-4 on the year, will host the Johnsonburg Rams Thursday night on Elementary Night. The varsity matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
