CLEARFIELD - It was a different kind of challenge for the St. Marys Area Swim & Dive team when they traveled to Clearfield to take on the Bisons for the first time this season Monday night. Despite dropping both meets, the Dutchmen and Lady Dutch came ready to compete with the girls, taking seven of 11 events, while the boys won one event. The loss is the first for the Dutchmen, who are now 3-1 this year, while the Lady Dutch’s record is 2-2.
The Lady Dutch kicked off the evening with a decisive win in the 200-yard medley relay. Brittany Orr took the lead early in the backstroke leg and the foursome never looked back as she and Emma Daghir, Michaela Rupprecht and Kylee Proudfit easily won the event.
Steph Buerk added first-place points with her wins in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events, as well as the 200-yard freestyle relay, where she was teamed with Megan Barber, Daghir and Proudfit.
The other wins by the Lady Dutch included Daghir in the 50-yard freestyle, Barber in the 100-yard freestyle and B. Orr in the100- yard backstroke.
The lack of depth really hurt the Lady Dutch in the final outcome. Besides the event winners, the Lady Dutch only managed three runner-up finishes in the remaining events. Those second place-spots were B. Orr in the 200-yard freestyle, Daghir in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay of Buerk, Rupprecht, Barber and B. Orr.
“The girls swam great races, but we weren’t able to fill the lanes like Clearfield did,” noted Coach Mary Secco. “It makes a big difference when you don’t have the depth to take the points, and that is a big reason why we lost the meet tonight. It certainly wasn’t lack of effort, just lack of numbers.”
The Dutchmen, on the other hand, didn’t notch many first-place wins, but their races were competitive, which may have surprised the talented Bisons squad.
The lone victory was enjoyed by Alex Renwick in the100-yard butterfly.
The Dutchmen managed to clinch second place in nine of the remaining ten events, with a few races lost by just a touch, including the 200-yard freestyle relay of Matt Hoffman, Corey Koss, Ryan Struble and Jeffrey Moore and the 400-yard freestyle relay of Koss, Hoffman, Renwick and Moore.
Other second-place finishes included Moore in the 200 and 500-yard freestyles, Renwick in the 200-yard individual medley, Thomas Murmann in the 50-yard freestyle, Justin Huey in diving, Koss in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard medley relay of Koss, Hoffman, Renwick and Struble.
“Our veteran swimmers had strong showings tonight against a very talented Clearfield team,” noted Coach Mark DeMuro. “But what was equally as impressive is that our new swimmers are getting more confident and really contributing. You can see their progression from meet to meet and it’s very encouraging.”
For the Lady Dutch, the new swimmers making their mark include Daghir, Kelsey Bonifay, Amy Orr and Cassie Wonderling. The Dutchmen have several first-year teammates, including Koss, Murmann, Jordan Agosti, Joey Ferragine, Tim Mosebarger, Gary Fledderman and Alec Foster. Mosebarger and Melinda Stebich are also first-year divers for the team.
The squads will be back in action this Thursday at 6 p.m. at the SMAHS Natatorium when they host the DuBois Area squads.
