ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Area High School swim and dive team held their last meet before the halfway mark when they met the DuBois Beavers at home on Thursday night. The evening was not short on excitement, as it took until the very last event to determine the winner of the girls’ meet, with the Lady Dutch falling short by only four points with a final score of 92-88. The boys didn’t need to win the final event, but still managed to bring the crowd to their feet with a closely contested 400 freestyle relay race that ended with a Dutchmen win to bring the final tally to 111-74 over the Beavers.
The Lady Dutch had a stellar night of swimming despite coming up short of a win. Steph Buerk was the first individual event winner with her season best time in the 500-yard freestyle. Later in the evening, Emma Daghir and Kylee Proudfit took top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke with their 1-2 placements while achieving top times in the race.
The relay teams were successful, clinching two of three of the races. The 200-yard medley relay of Brittany Orr, Daghir, Michaela Rupprecht and Proudfit won the first event, as did the 200-yard freestyle relay of Daghir, Proudfit, Megan Barber and Buerk. The foursome is less than two seconds away from a school record as a result.
Second-place finishers included Buerk in the 200-yard freestyle, Proudfit in the 200-yard individual medley, Daghir in the 50-yard freestyle, Rupprecht in the 100-yard butterfly, Barber in the 100-yard freestyle, Orr in the 100-yard backstroke and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Rupprecht, Barber, Orr and Buerk.
“We had some nice time drops and personal bests out of our girls tonight,” said Coach Mark DeMuro. “The meet was exciting and fun. It would have been nice to walk away with a win, but we saw what we wanted to see tonight and it was all good.”
The Dutchmen, on the other hand, had an easier time with things. The evening was capped with a very exciting 400 freestyle relay swim which included Alex Renwick, Thomas Murmann, Ryan Struble and Jeffrey Moore. The Beavers gave the Dutch a run, but Moore held his own in the final leg to capture the event by a touch. Moore was equally impressive in the 500-yard freestyle, where he won the event with a career best time, as well as anchoring the 200-yard freestyle relay to another first-place position. The remaining members of the relay were Corey Koss, Ryan Struble and Matt Hoffman. Struble also had a personal best and a win in the 100-yard freestyle, as did Koss in the 100-yard backstroke. Hoffman also was an individual winner in the 100-yard breaststroke. The 200-yard medley relay of Koss, Hoffman, Renwick and Murmann were also victorious.
Justin Huey had an impressive win in diving, with over 200 points for his six dives.
Second-place finishers included Koss in the 200-yard freestyle, Hoffman in the 200-yard individual medley, Moore in the 50-yard freestyle, Jake Burns in diving, Renwick in the 100-yard butterfly and Murmann in the 100-yard freestyle.
“We switched things up a little tonight and the guys delivered,” noted Coach DeMuro. “They had a good time with it, but still stayed focused enough to get the job done.”
The team will travel to Brookville next Thursday, Febr. 3 to kick off the second half of the dual meet schedule.
