BROOKVILLE - The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch swim and dive team improved their record to 3-3, while the Dutchmen are now 5-1 with their sweep of the Brookville Raiders Thursday evening in Brookville. Both of the squads had to overcome injury to come away with their victories. The Lady Dutch won their portion 108-70, while the boys came up with a 107-68 win.
The Lady Dutch won all but one event on the evening. Emma Daghir continued to impress in her freshman year as a quadruple winner. Individually, Daghir won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke, her time in the breaststroke being a personal best. In the relays, Daghir joined with Brittany Orr, Michaela Rupprecht and Kylee Proudfit to win the 200-yard medley relay with a season-best time, then later with Megan Barber, Steph Buerk and Proudfit in the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay.
Other individual winners included Buerk in the 200-yard freestyle, Proudfit in the 200-yard individual medley, Rupprecht in the 100-yard butterfly and Orr in the100-yard backstroke. The 400-yard freestyle relay capped off the evening with a win which included Rupprecht, Barber, Orr and Melinda Stebich.
“Our girls had a very strong showing tonight. There were some time drops that we were happy with, but we are mostly happy with the consistency and determination for which these girls train and perform,” said St. Marys head coach Mark DeMuro.
The Dutchmen, on the other hand, collected more second-place finishes than wins, but the depth of the team helped them notch the victory.
Leading the Dutchmen was Matt Hoffman in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. Hoffman was also part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay that outtouched the Raider team by the narrowest of margins, .02 seconds. The remaining relay members were Thomas Murmann, Ryan Struble and Jeffrey Moore. The last event of the evening found Hoffman again in the winner’s circle, with teammates Koss, Renwick and Moore in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
Other first place finishes were snagged by Jake Burns in diving, Corey Koss in the 100-yard backstroke and Moore in the 500-yard freestyle.
“Our boys did well tonight, despite having to make some last minute adjustments to the lineup. They have risen above everything thrown at them this year, including Andrew Cotter being out for the season due to injury,” noted DeMuro. “Their win in the 200 free relay was indicative of how well they have pulled together as a team.”
Personal bests were enjoyed by Orr and Alex Renwick in the 50-yard freestyle; Struble in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle; Stebich and Alec Foster in the 100-yard freestyle; Jordan Agosti in the 500-yard freestyle; Gary Fledderman in the 100-yard backstroke; and Daghir, Proudfit and Murmann in the 100-yard breaststroke.
“Lots of time drops, lots of personal bests. That is what we like to see this time of year,” added DeMuro.
The squads will host Central Mountain Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the SMAHS Natatorium.
