The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch wrestling squad rallied to defeat the Redbank Valley Bulldogs by a 30-29 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Dutch were trailing 29-12 with three matches remaining. At 171 pounds, Dutchman Kyle Wolfel pinned Matt Hetrick at the 2:51 mark, cutting the Bulldogs’ lead to 29-18. At 189 pounds, Dutchman Joe McLaughlin pinned Corey Cyphert at the 2:16 mark of their match to make the score 29-24. At 215 pounds, SMA’s Jimmy Antonelli pinned Braden Bowser at the 3:38 mark of their match, giving the Dutch the 30-29 win.
“There were reasons why we won and there were reasons why we didn’t lose,” said St. Marys coach Dominic Surra. “We had four guys who fought hard to get off their backs and avoid team points.
“There were kids who wrestled aggressively and solid and those who wrestled aggressively and sloppy. But we didn’t give up the team points. I am proud of the team for their resilience.
“Kyle Wolfel gave us the opportunity, Joe McLaughlin got us close and Jimmy Antonelli finished it for us.”
The match started at 285 pounds, where Dutchman Kevin Hoy gave St. Marys the 3-0 lead with a 7-3 decision over Clay Kennemuth.
The Bulldogs then came back to win the next seven matches to take a 26-3 lead. Mitch Blose decisioned Damien Wensel 17-11 at 103. Willis Gruver decisioned Trenton Bowers, 7-0, and Nicholas Schrecengost recorded a 10-0 major decision over Evan Smith. Garret Hildebrand recorded a 13-5 decision over Alex Coudriet. Ty Hanes pinned Bill Gabor at the 2:41 mark of their match. Evan Shirey decisioned Darren Lyon 3-2 and Brandon Bailey decisioned Sam Miller 6-4.
Dutchman Allan Gursky used an escape in the second period to edge Aaron Hook 1-0 at 145 pounds, making the score 26-6. Alex Feldbauer of the Dutch pinned Luke Hinderliter at the 1:39 mark of their 152 match to cut the Redbank lead to 26-12. At 160 pounds, Cole Shirey of the Bulldogs recorded an 8-4 decision over Michael Brennen, giving the Bulldogs the 29-12 lead.
