ST. MARYS - Ashley Wilson’s foul shot with three seconds remaining gave the Kane Lady Wolves a 40-39 victory over the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders and the Allegheny Mountain League championship Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for most of the evening. The Lady Crusaders held a 39-37 lead with 51 seconds left. A field goal by Kane’s Drew Victory tied the game at 39 with 34 seconds left, setting up Wilson’s foul shot.
“I could see it in their eyes during that last timeout, especially the two seniors,” said Kane head coach Dave Kiehl, referring to Ashley Wilson and Andrea Saquin.
“Ashley and Andrea stepped it up and did what they needed to do,” he said. “This is a terrific bunch of kids that work hard.
“I tip my hat to Elk Catholic, they’re gonna battle you but I had confidence in the kids. They worked hard to defend their (AML) title.
“This game proves that hard work pays off.”
The Lady Wolves were led offensively by Andrea Saquin with 21 points on seven field goals and a seven-for-seven night from the foul line. Drew Victory was next with eight points.
The Lady Crusaders were led by Abbi Petrosky with 17 points on five field goals and a seven-for-nine night from the foul line. Karly Carnovale was next with seven points.
“Obviously we played hard again. We just had a few too many turnovers than we would have liked,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
“We didn’t get the ball to bounce our way in the fourth quarter,” he said.
“It was a good effort tonight. The ball just didn’t bounce our way at the end.”
The game opened with two field goals by Victory, as the Lady Wolves went up 4-0. A three by Carnovale cut Kane’s lead to 4-3. Victory scored on a putback. Elk Catholic went on a 7-0 run as Lexie Meholic and Abby Petrosky scored on field goals. Petrosky also sank three of four foul shots, giving ECC the 10-6 lead. Saquin converted a three-point play at the 1:52 mark and added a field goal with 1:25 left in the period, giving the Lady Wolves the 11-10 lead after the first period.
Kaila Jamerson gave Kane a 13-10 lead to open the second period. Ellie Petrosky scored for Elk. Abbi Petrosky tied the game at 13 with a foul shot. She sank another, giving ECC the 14-13 lead. Dawn Saquin gave Kane a 15-14 lead at the 4:29 mark. With 1:47 left Dawn Saquin sank two foul shots, 17-14. Kristy Hanes scored for Elk, with Jamerson scoring for Kane, giving the Lady Wolves the 19-16 halftime lead.
Abbi Petrosky and Andrea Saquin traded buckets to open the second half. Saquin and Hanes exchanged field goals, as did Victory and Elk’s Maggie Sorg, 25-22. Andrea Saquin sank two foul shots, 27-22. Abbi Petrosky and Meholic scored for ECC to cut the Kane lead to 27-26 with 25 seconds left in the third quarter. A field goal by Andrea Saquin gave Kane the 29-26 lead after three quarters.
Andrea Saquin and Carnovale traded buckets to open the fourth quarter. Abbi Petrosky converted a three-point play, knotting the game at 31. She gave Elk the 33-31 lead with Carnovale scoring off a steal, giving Elk the 35-31 lead. Jamerson scored to make it 35-33. Meholic sank a foul shot, with Andrea Saquin sinking two for Kane to cut Elk’s lead to 36-34. Ellie Petrosky scored on a putback, 38-35. Andrea Saquin sank two foul shots, 38-37. Abbi Petrosky sank one of two, giving ECC the 39-37 lead with 51 seconds remaining. Kane tied the game at 39 with 34 seconds left. Wilson was fouled with three seconds left and sank one of two foul shots, giving Kane the 40-39 victory.
The Lady Crusaders are now 17-7 on the year. They will open play in the District 9 Class A playoffs on Tuesday when they host the Smethport Lady Hubbers at 7 p.m. at the ECCHS gym.
