SMA finishes season with outstanding 22-2 record
CLARION - The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team was eliminated from the PIAA Class AAA tournament on Saturday by a 69-23 score by the New Castle Hurricanes. The first-round game was played at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Hurricanes jumped out to an early lead in the contest, opening a 24-4 advantage after the first eight minutes of play. In the second quarter, they outscored the Lady Dutch by a 27-8 margin to take a 51-12 halftime lead.
“New Castle has a nice ball club. They are quick, big and hit the boards strong,” said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
“Our kids picked it up after Kayla (Hoohuli) went down. They came back hard,”he added.
Senior guard Kayla Hoohuli went down with a knee injury at the 1:22 mark of the first quarter. She tried to come back later in the second half, but was unable to go.
“We made a few tweaks on offense and defense, Coach Dan (Hoohuli) defensively, and Coach Leona (Hoohuli) offensively,” said Swanson. “I thought we did a nice job in the second half.”
The Lady Dutch offense was led by Adair Gennocro with nine points on four field goals and a one-for-two night from the foul line. Kiana Hoohuli was next with five points.
New Castle was led by Ja’Nia McPhatter with 22 points on nine twos, one three and a one-for-one night from the foul line. LaShauna Brothers scored 15 points on three twos and three threes and Delvona Dennis added 13 points on three twos, one three and a four-for-six night from the foul line.
Concerning the season, Swanson said, “This was a fantastic season, not only in wins (22), but in character. We have a good team and now we have work to do. But this group has never shied away from work.”
The game opened with Brothers hitting a three for New Castle. Gennocro scored for the Lady Dutch, 3-2, with 6:49 left in the period. McPhatter hit a three and Dennis and Brothers twos, giving the Hurricanes the 10-2 lead. Mandy Gerarge scored for St. Marys, 10-4, with 3:35 left in the quarter. The Hurricanes increased their lead to 17-4 with 1:43 left on a bucket by Brothers. With 1:22 left in the period, Kayla Hoohuli went down with a knee injury and was assisted from the court. New Castle closed out the period with seven straight points, taking a 24-4 lead after the first period.
Gerarge scored the opening bucket of the second quarter, 24-6. New Castle’s Christina Talbert and SMA’s DeAnna Yost traded field goals, 26-8. New Castle scored nine unanswered points to go up 35-8 with 4:05 left in the first half. Kiana Hoohuli sank two foul shots, 35-10. The Hurricanes went on a 14-0 run to take a 49-10 lead before Gennocro scored with 38 seconds left in the half, 49-12. New Castle led 51-12 at the half.
McPhatter scored at the 7:39 mark of the third period, making the score 53-21. Gennocro and Brothers traded buckets as the mercy rule came into play, 54-14. McPhatter and Gennocro traded buckets, 57-16. McPhatter converted a three-point play, making the score 60-16 after three quarters of play.
New Castle opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, 67-15. Kiana Hoohuli converted two of three foul shots, 67-19. The Hurricanes went up 69-19 with a field goal. St. Marys scored the final five points of the contest, as Gennocro sank one of two foul shots and Kiana Hoohuli was also one of two from the foul line. Yost had a field goal and Rachel Walker a one-for-two from the foul line, making the final score 69-23 in favor of New Castle.
The Lady Dutch finished their season with an outstanding 22-2 record. They were the District 9 League champs, with a 9-1 record, and won their fourth consecutive District 9 Class AAA championship.
Playing in their final game for the Lady Dutch were Kayla Hoohuli, Mandy Gerarge, Rachel Walker and Shelby Zomcik.
New Castle now meets Blackhawk on Wednesday at North Hills High School. Blackhawk is the District 7 champ, while New Castle is the fourth-place team from District 7.
