Thomas C. Launer, 57, of 5236 Ridgway-Johnsonburg Rd., Johnsonburg, died Sunday evening, April 3, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
He was born Oct. 2, 1953, in Ridgway, son of Kenneth E. and the late Naomi Huckabone Launer.
On Aug. 16, 1975 in Holy Rosary Church, he married Gail F. Franco, who survives.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life. He graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1971 and Penn State University in 1977.
He was a member of the HFHS Coaches Association and PA Scholarship Football Association, and was the Johnsonburg Area High School varsity football and wrestling coach. He had also been a junior high football coach, junior high wrestling coach and track coach at Johnsonburg Area High School. He had also coached PA squad in the 2007 Raabe Classic Big 30 Football game and the Johnsonburg squads for the Johnsonburg vs. Kane alumni games. He helped to reorganize the Johnsonburg Midget Football Program and was instrumental in giving the program its name, the Shamrocks. He helped to start the Johnsonburg Junior Legion Baseball program and helped to start and coached in the Johnsonburg Men's Softball League. He coached Knothole Baseball, Little League Baseball, Senior League Baseball, American Legion Baseball and Johnsonburg Recreational Youth Soccer. He was a high school baseball umpire and an avid Cleveland Browns football fan.
He was employed by Domtar at their Johnsonburg mill for the past 33 years.
He is survived by his wife, Gail F. Launer, at home; his father, Kenneth E. Launer and stepmother, Rose Cunningham Launer; two sons, Robert T. "Rob" Launer of Johnsonburg and James A. "Jim" Launer of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Kenneth E. Launer Jr. and his wife Bonnie of Johnsonburg, Donald E. Launer and his wife Cheryl of Johnsonburg, and Shane A. Launer and his wife Missy of Johnsonburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Naomi Launer in 1996; a nephew, Josh K. Launer; and his father-in-law, Ralph Franco, on Dec. 31, 2010.
A funeral service for Thomas C. Launer will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor.
Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Johnsonburg.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
