The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team suffered their first loss of the season Friday as the State College Little Lions downed the Dutch by an 11-1 score in five innings at Berwind Park.
This was the Dutchmen’s first complete game, as their game Tuesday against Punxsutawney was suspended after 2 1/2 innings due to unplayable conditions.
The Dutch gave up 12 walks and one hit batsman, which the Little Lions capitalized on.
“We knew pitching and defense would be a soft spot this season,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato.
“Pitching sets the tone for the game and when you start out with five walks in the first inning, the guys are down from that. It’s tough to fight back from that,” said Azzato, who noted that of their 12 walked batters, nine of them scored runs.
“Take away the runs scored via the walks and it’s a 2-1 game,” Azzato said.
“We can’t use the excuse that this was our first game, a sad first game. We have a lot of work to do,” he added.
The Dutchmen were limited to three hits. Kevin Uhl and Ryan Uhl both doubled, while Robert Watts singled.
Ryan Uhl started on the mound for St. Marys, going 1 1/3 innings and giving up three hits, walking five and striking out one. Luke Nicklas worked 2 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, walking five and striking out one. Kevin Hoy worked 1 1/3 innings, giving up three hits, walking two and striking out one.
Mike Finlan went the distance for State College, giving up three hits, walking three and striking out five. Darian Herncane led the State College offense with two home runs, one a grand slam.
State College scored two runs in the top half of the first inning on five walks and left the bases loaded. In the home half of the inning, Hoy walked with two outs and Uhl doubled, but neither were able to score.
The Little Lions erupted for five runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batsman and left two runners stranded to take a 7-0 lead after the top of the second inning. Watts beat out an infield single with one out, but was left stranded for the Dutchmen.
State College left a runner stranded in the top of the third inning. In the home half of the inning, the Dutch left a man on base also.
Herncane hit a lead-off homer in the top of the fifth and the Little Lions added another run to take a 9-0 lead. The home half of the fourth found St. Marys leaving a runner stranded after Nicklas led off with a walk.
In the top of the fifth, State College scored twice on three hits and two walks and left the bases loaded as they took an 11-0 lead. In the home half of the inning, Weinzierl reached base on an infield hit. A double by Hoy scored Weinzierl from first, making the final score 11-1 in favor of State College.
The Dutchmen are now 0-1 on the season. They return to action Tuesday when they play host to the DuBois Area Beavers at Berwind Park at 4:15 p.m.
