St. Marys Area's Rachel Ginther pitched a perfect game on Friday afternoon as the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch recorded a five-inning, 10-0 victory over the Cameron County Lady Raiders at the softball field at St. Marys Area High School.
Ginther faced only 15 batters in the five-inning game, striking out 12 of the 15. Only three batters were able to put the ball in play; two of the hits were infield grounders and one was a fly ball to center field.
"Rachel was in command of her pitches today. She was moving the ball around and many of the Cameron County players were unable to get a bat on the ball," said Coach Manny Gerarge. "I'm happy with the win, as we played pretty good ball today. Our defense was excellent when they put the ball in play, and our offense was okay. We hit the ball a little better on Thursday then we did today, but we again came up with the big hit when we needed it."
"This was a good win for us, as I was able to get some playing time for some of our reserves," he added.
Cameron County's A. Wykoff was the losing pitcher. She went four innings, giving up nine runs on three hits while walking 11 and striking out one. A. Clinger came on in the fifth inning and gave up a double and a run-scoring single that made the score 10-0 and ended the game.
Hayley McGowan and Kali Quagliani led the Lady Dutch in the hitting department with two hits each. McGowan had a triple and a single, while Quagliani had two singles. Erica Sorg had the only other hit, a double, in the fifth inning.
The Cameron County girls went down in order in the top of the first inning, while the St. Marys squad scored three first-inning runs. Sorg drew a walk, then Quagliani singled. Sorg then scored on a ground out by Ginther. McGowan tripled to score Quagliani, then McGowan came home on an infield out by Savanah Krivonyak to make it 3-0.
The Lady Raiders went down in order again in the second inning while the Lady Dutch tacked on another run, as Taylor Bellina drew a walk and stole second, third and home to make it 4-0.
Neither team scored in the third inning, but after retiring the Lady Raiders in order in the fourth, the Lady Dutch tacked on five more runs. Bellina, Kelsey Fritz and Quagliani all drew walks to load the bases. An error allowed Bellina to score, then a single by McGowan knocked in two more runs. Three more walks allowed two more runs to score, giving St. Marys a 9-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Lady Raiders went down in order. In the bottom half of the inning, Sorg opened with a double, then scored the game-ending run when Quagliani singled. This made the score 10-0 and ended the game as the 10-run rule kicked in.
St. Marys is now 3-1 on the season.
The Lady Dutch will return to action on Monday when they travel to DuBois to take on the Lady Beavers in a game slated for a 4:15 p.m. start. St. Marys will be at home on Wednesday afternoon when they entertain Bradord Area.
