The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch tennis team handed the Elk County Catholic Crusaders an 8-1 setback in a match held Thursday afternoon at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts.
"I think one of our problems today was that we weren't able to get any momentum or good solid starts to the matches," said Nick Caggiano, ECCH coach. "St. Marys has a very talented group of individuals."
"We had some patches of good shots, good-looking strokes, but weren't able to translate it into consistent playing," added Caggiano. "That being said, you learn a lot about yourself and about your games much better through losses than wins. So hopefully we can take a look at what went on today and come back out next time with a better performance."
St. Marys Area's Brandon Romain won over Shane Manusco at No. 1 singles by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
In the second singles, St. Marys Area's Keith Meyer defeated Jarid DeCarli by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
Dylan Weisner of St. Marys defeated Elk's Nate Dattoli by a 6-1, 6-0 score in the third singles, while Michael Fox of St. Marys topped Elk's Scott Krellner by a 6-3, 7-5 score.
In the final singles match, Michael Brennen of St. Marys defeated Elk's Darren Simons 6-3, 6-3 to give St. Marys a 5-0 sweep in singles.
In the first doubles match, Mancuso and DeCarli of Elk lost an 8-1 match to Meyer and Romain of St. Marys.
Elk's second doubles team of Krellner and Simons recorded the only win for the Crusaders as they defeated D. J. Challingsworth and Gary Fledderman by an 8-2 score.
Evan Lepovetsky and Brennen teamed up at third doubles to record a win over Elk's Dattoli and Scott Reichard by an 8-5 score. In the final doubles match, St. Marys won over Scott Reichard and Kyler Breakey by an 8-6 score.
The Crusaders and Dutch will both be in action this afternoon on their home courts as Elk will host Clearfield and St. Marys will host Bradford.
