John "Gary" Hnath, 69, of 380 Berwind St., St. Marys, died at his residence on Sunday, May 1, 2011.
He was born Aug. 26, 1941 in St. Marys, a son of the late John T. and Rita Wehler Hnath.
On Aug. 1, 1979, in Queen of the World Church, he married Carol Caskey Hnath, who survives.
He served in the Air Force. He was a tool and die maker for many years. He was also a gunsmith who owned and operated "Gary's Crafts" from his home, where he did woodworking. He was a hunter and fisherman and also an avid trap and skeet shooter. He enjoyed gardening and dancing. He liked to spend his free time with his family and his dog Harley. He was a member of the Queen of the World Church, the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club, St. Marys Campowners, the NRA, and the Tri-County Hogs, with whom he rode his Harley.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sons, Martin Hnath of St. Marys, Mark "Butch" Hnath and his wife Lori of St. Marys, Steve Atkeson and his wife Michele of St. Marys, Thomas Atkeson of St. Marys, and John Hnath Jr. of St. Marys; two daughters, Lynn and her husband Dennis Hoffman of St. Marys, and Kelly and her husband David Stebich of St. Marys; 9 grandchildren, Matthew Monteforte, Brittany Mohney, Kristen Mohney, Sebastian Wehler, Cheyenne Hoffman, Seth Badeau, Ashley Hnath, Trevor Atkeson, and Connor Stebich; a great-granddaughter, Kyah Mohney; three sisters, Rita and her husband John Peterson of St. Marys, Janet and her husband Salvatore Riggio of State College, and Bonnie and her husband Jim Kopp of St. Marys; and two brothers, Don Hnath and his wife Emily of Santa Fe, N.M., and Tim Hnath of St. Marys.
A memorial service for John "Gary" Hnath will be held at the Queen Of The World Church, 134 Queens Rd., St. Marys, on Saturday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Michael Ferrick, pastor, ofﬁciating.
A military service will be conducted by the St. Marys Serviceman's Detail.
