The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team took third place in the Elk County Baseball Tournament by defeating the Ridgway Elkers by a 10-0 score in six innings Saturday at Berwind Park.
The Dutch used the one-hit pitching of Nate Geist to record the victory over Ridgway. Geist went the distance for the Dutch, giving up only one hit--a single in the top of the sixth-- walking four, and striking out six.
D.J. Skraba started on the mound for Ridgway, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up 11 hits, walking two and striking out three. Zack McKnight faced two batters,giving up two hits.
The Dutch had 13 hits in the contest. Kevin Hoy had two doubles, Bob Vollmer a double and a single, Ryan Uhl three singles, Jordan Weinzierl and Luke Nicklas two singles each, and Rocco Harshbarger and Dalton Kline one single each.
Jesse Gardner had the lone single for the Elkers.
“Nate Geist, a reliever, stepped in and had a no-hitter going into the last inning,” said Dutch coach Tony Azzato.
“We played well enough to win today,” said Azzato. “I’m hoping this is a sign that we’re coming around.”
The Elkers left one man on base in the top of the first inning. In the home half of the inning, Justin Quiggle led off with a walk. He stole second and scored when Weinzierl hit into an infield out. Hoy doubled and moved to third on a passed ball. A single by Uhl scored Hoy, giving St. Marys the 2-0 lead.
Each team left two runners stranded in the second inning. The third inning found each team only sending three batters to the plate.
Ridgway left a runner stranded in the top of the fourth. In the home half of the inning, Kline led off with a single. With one out, Bob Vollmer reached base on an error. Quiggle reached base on an error scoring Kline. A single by Weinzierl scored both Vollmer and Quiggle, giving the Dutch the 5-0 lead.
Each team went in order in the fifth inning. With one out in the top of the sixth, Josh Mitchell reached base on an error. With two outs, Gardner singled. Both were left stranded. In the the home half of the inning, David Aul led off with a walk. Bob Vollmer doubled. With one out, Weinzierl was hit by a pitch. A double by Hoy scored Aul and Vollmer. A single by Uhl scored Weinzierl and Hoy. Nicklas followed with a single. A single by Harshbarger scored Uhl to give the Dutch the 10-0 win with the mercy rule in effect.
The Dutch, now 5-7 on the year, will travel to Brookville this afternoon for a 4:15 p.m. contest.
