Rachel Ginther pitched a no-hitter on Monday afternoon at the St. Marys Area softball field against the visiting Brookville Lady Raiders. The Lady Dutch won the game in five innings by a 12-0 score. The victory was the 10th of the season for the Lady Dutch.
Ginther was one pitch away from a perfect game, having retired 14 straight batters before issuing a walk to the 15th batter after running the count to 3-2.
"Rachel was definitely in command of her pitches today," said Coach Manny Gerarge of the Lady Dutch. "She was in a zone, as she was throwing strikes."
"I was a little concerned how the girls would play today after the big win on Friday and the prom weekend. I thought they might come out a little flat, but it was just the opposite as they played hard and aggressively," the coach said. "We hit the ball well today, especially when we had people on base. Our defense was excellent on the few times that the Brookville squad was able to put a bat on the ball.
"Overall it was a big win and now we have to prepare for Ridgway on Friday, DuBois, Bradford and Elk County Catholic next week."
Ginther struck out 11 batters on her way to the no-hitter. She gave up just one walk in picking up the win for St. Marys.
Stef Alexander was the losing pitcher for the Lady Raiders as she gave up all 12 runs on 11 hits, while walking four and striking out two.
Erica Sorg, Rachel Ginther, Hayley McGowan and Mandy Gerarge each had two hits for the Lady Dutch, while Savanah Krivonyak had a double and Mia Keener and Taylor Bellina each added a single.
Brookville went down in order in the first four innings, then managed to get a base runner in the fifth before the final out was recorded.
St. Marys scored four times in the first inning when Sorg singled, then stole second and third. Keener walked and advanced to second. Ginther flied out, then McGowan hit a single to score Sorg and Keener. McGowan scored when Krivonyak reached first on an error. Another error followed by a single by Bellina scored Krivonyak to make it 4-0.
St. Marys scored five times in the second inning when Keener and Ginther opened with singles. Keener was then forced at third on a fielder's choice by McGowan. Gerarge then singled home Ginther. Krivonyak doubled to score McGowan and Gerarge. Cassie Wonderling drew a walk. Both Krivonyak and Wonderling advanced on a passed ball, then scored on an unsuccessful fielder's choice to make the score 9-0.
The Lady Dutch were held scoreless in the third, but in the fourth they scored three more runs when Kelsey Fritz reached on an error and Bellina and Sorg drew walks. A sacrifice by Morgan Lovenduski scored Fritz, then Bellina and Sorg scored following back-to-back singles by Ginther and McGowan to make it 12-0.
When Brookville failed to score in the top of the fifth, the game ended due to the 10-run rule.
St. Marys is now 10-3 on the season and will be in action on Friday when they travel to Ridgway to take on the Lady Elkers in a game slated for a 4:15 p.m. start. The JVs will also play at Ridgway.
