DuBOIS - St. Marys Area’s Brandon Romain won the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Monday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Romain defeated DuBois Central’s David Gangeware 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match.
Brandon started the day by defeating Brockway’s Fabio Fortunato 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Romain beat DuBois Central’s Kevin Blakely 6-2, 6-0 to reach the finals.
Romain’s teammate Keith Meyer lost in the quarterfinals to Elk County Catholic’s Ben Wortman 6-4, 3-6, 0-6.
Wortman lost in the semifinals to DCC’s Gangewere 6-2, 6-3.
Wortman’s teammate Jarid DeCarli, lost a 6-4, 6-0 match to Fortunato in the opening round.
“That was one heck of a match,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky about the championship match. “It was beautiful and fun to watch.”
“Brandon was determined today,” said Lepovetsky. “Overall it was a very good day.”
The Dutch will return to action Wednesday when they meet the Elk County Catholic Crusaders at Benzinger Park for the District 9-AA team tennis championship beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Class AAA team match between Punxsutawney and DuBois Area will be played at DuBois area beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The District 9 AA and AAA doubles tournament is scheduled for next Monday at DuBois Area High School.
In Class AAA, DuBois Area’s Palmer Casteel defeated his teammate Trey Gilmore in the finals in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Both Romain and Casteel advance to their respective PIAA championships scheduled for May 27 and 28 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
