The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team improved to 9-8 on the season with an 11-1, five-inning victory over the Coudersport Falcons Monday at Berwind Park.
Monday was the completion of a suspended game that began on April 26. That game was halted in the bottom of the first inning with one out and St. Marys up 2-0.
For the contest St. Marys pounded out 14 hits led by Ryan Uhl’s home run and single. Kevin Hoy had a double and a single while Bob Vollmer, Luke Nicklas and Justin Quiggle each had two singles. Jordan Weinzierl, Nate Geist and David Aul each had a single and Branden Tyger doubled.
The Falcons were limited to one hit. Dalton Kline started the game on April 26. Rocco Harshbarger began Monday’s contest and worked three innings for the Dutch, giving up one hit and striking out one. Luke Nicklas worked one inning of relief, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out two.
“It was a very good win. We’re starting to play our game,” said Dutch coach Tony Azzato. “Rocco threw 27 pitches in three innings. He kept the ball down and our defense was there.
“We were pleased with the win. We’re hitting the ball and doing well in situational hitting. We have two more games to close it out, then on to the playoffs.”
Coudersport scored a run in the top of the first inning to take the 1-0 lead. The Dutch came back with two in the bottom of the first when Bob Vollmer and Jordan Weinzierl both walked. A single by Hoy scored Vollmer and a single by Uhl scored Weinzierl.
The Falcons left a runner on base in the top of the second. In the home half of the inning, Geist led off with a single. Nicklas reached base on a bunt single. A single by Quiggle scored Geist. Bob Vollmer walked and stole second. Weinzierl reached base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Nicklas. A double by Hoy scored Vollmer and Weinzierl, giving St. Marys the 6-1 lead.
Coudersport went in order in the third inning. With one out in the home half of the inning, Nicklas singled and Quiggle reached base on an infield hit. Bob Vollmer singled, scoring Nicklas. A single by Weinzierl scored Quiggle, with Vollmer being thrown out at the plate on the play. Hoy walked. Both Weinzierl and Hoy scored on a home run by Uhl, giving St. Marys the 11-1 lead.
The top of the fourth found Coudersport going down in order while the Dutch left two men on base.
In the top of the fifth, the Falcons stranded two runners as the Dutch recorded the 11-1 victory.
The Dutch return to action Wednesday when they host the Bradford Owls at 4:15 p.m. at Berwind Park.
