The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team picked up two victories on Thursday afternoon at the St. Marys Area softball field as they took a doubleheader from the visiting Bradford Lady Owls. The Lady Dutch took the opening game by an 11-0 score in five innings, then won the nightcap by a 19-0 score in three innings.
"Hayley McGowan had a great day for us, as she hit the ball very well today and had a great defensive day behind the plate also," said Coach Manny Gerarge of the Lady Dutch. "She had five RBIs in the opening game and three more in the second game to go along with her five hits.
"We made some mental mistakes early in the first game but then we bounced back to take control of the ball game. Overall we didn't hit the ball that well early in the first game, but as the game went on we started hitting much better. In the second game we just dominated with our hitting and defense.
"It was nice to be able to bounce back after Monday's loss at Williamsport. The girls looked good today as we needed this type of game to get ready for Friday's game with ECCHS."
Rachel Ginther picked up the victory in the first game as she struck out 13 batters, issued one walk and gave up two hits in the five innings. Erika Bashaw was the losing pitcher in this game as she gave up 13 hits, struck out seven, walked four and hit one batter.
Hayley McGowan and Erica Sorg led the Lady Dutch in hitting in this game as McGowan had a homer, double and single, while Sorg had three singles. Kali Quagliani and Rachel Ginther each had a double and single, while Savanah Krivoyank had a double, and Mandy Gerarge and Taylor Belina each had a single.
For the Bradford Lady Owls, Angela Comilla had a double and Meagan Hillard a single.
Neither team was able to score in the first two innings, but St. Marys broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the third with two runs. Sorg and Quagliani both drew walks and scored on a double by Ginther to make it 2-0.
St. Marys picked up another run in the fourth when Krivonyak doubled, went to second on a wild pitch, then scored on an error to make it 3-0.
St. Marys tacked on four more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Sorg and Quagliani both singled to open the inning, then advanced on a passed ball. Sorg then came home on Ginther's sacrifice fly to left. McGowan then doubled to score Quagliani. Gerarge was hit by a pitch and both McGowan and Gerarge scored on Belina's single, making it 7-0.
The Lady Dutch ended the game in the bottom of the sixth when Sorg singled and Quagaliani walked. Ginther then singled home Sorg. McGowan ended the game with her three-run homer over the left center field fence. This made the score 11-0 and ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
The Lady Dutch took the second game of the doubleheader by a 19-0 score in three innings. Kelsey Fritz was the winning pitcher for the St. Marys squad as she gave up one hit, struck out four and hit one batter.
Hayley McGowan led the Lady Dutch in hitting with a double and single, while Kali Quagliani, Raelyn Cunningham, Ashlee Johnston, Mandy Gerarge, Savanah Krivonyak, Cassie Wonderling, Shondra Ginther, Taylor Belina, Kristen Huff and Mia Keener each had a single. Angela Comilla had the only hit for Bradford, a single.
St. Marys jumped on the Bradford girls right away in this game, scoring 10 times in the first inning. Sorg and Quagliani both drew walks. Sorg was forced out at third on Cunningham's fielder's choice. McGowan then doubled Quagliani and Cunningham home. Gerarge reached on an unsuccessful fielder's choice, then Krivonyak and Wonderling both singled to drive in two runs. Belina drew a walk to load the bases. Keener singled home two runs, then Sorg walked to reload the bases. Quagliani singled home a run, with another run scoring when Cunningham reached on an error. McGowan was hit by a pitch, then Gerarge drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
St. Marys picked up seven runs in the second inning to take a 17-0 lead. In this frame Belina hit a single and Keener and Sorg walked to load the bases. Quagliani reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Belina. Cunningham reached on an error, scoring another run. McGowan and Gerarge both singled, scoring two more runs. An outfield error on Amber Gerarge's fly ball accounted for two more runs, then Gerarge came home on Kristen Huff's single.
The Lady Dutch picked up two more tallies in the third when Cunningham and Ashlee Johnston hit back-to-back singles, then advanced to second and third on an infield out and scored on a single by Shondra Ginther.
Bradford failed to score in the bottom of the third, thus ending the game due to the 15 run rule.
St. Marys is now 13-4 on the season and will play again today when they host the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders in a game slated for 4:15 p.m. at the St. Marys Area softball field.
