BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks defeated the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 10-5 score Wednesday in the District 9 Class AAA championship game played at Brockway Area High School.
Punxsutawney advances to the PIAA Class AAA tourney, which opens Monday. They will take on the District 7 runner-up.
In Wednesday’s game, the Chucks came up with eight runs on four hits and an error in the fourth inning to break the game open.
“We started out like a ball of fire with a couple of runs in the first inning, then fell flat for four innings. We came alive in the sixth but it was a little too late,” said Dutch head coach Tony Azzato.
“It wasn’t the Kevin Hoy (on the mound) we had seen the last couple of games. Injuries do that to you. It’s the stuff every team has to deal with,” said Azzato. “The weather made the season tough, such as 12 games in 15 days.
“I wish all the seniors the best. We’re going to miss them.”
Playing in their final game for the Dutch were Bob Vollmer, Jordan Weinzierl, Kevin Hoy, Ryan Uhl, Rocco Harshbarger, Nate Geist and Luke Nicklas.
Hoy started on the mound for the Dutch and worked three innings, giving up six hits, walking three and striking out three. Ryan Uhl worked one inning of relief, giving up four hits and walking two. Bob Vollmer worked two innings of relief, giving up two hits and striking out one. Joe Pisano went the distance for the Chucks, giving up six hits, walking one and striking out eight.
The Dutch had six hits in the contest. Weinzierl doubled and singled, while Uhl homered. Getting singles were Justin Quiggle, Hoy and Bob Vollmer.
With one out in the top half of the first inning, Weinzierl doubled. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Hoy. Uhl followed with a home run to give the Dutch the 2-0 lead. The Chucks left the bases loaded in their half of the inning.
Both teams went down in order in the second inning. St. Marys went in order in the top of the third, while the Chucks scored a run on two hits and left a man on base.
The Dutch stranded a runner in the top half of the fourth inning. Punxsy erupted for eight runs in the home half of the inning on four hits and an error. One of those hits was a grand slam by Zak Dickey and one was a three-run homer by Brodi Lowmaster as the Chucks went up 9-2.
It was a 1-2-3 inning for both teams in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Quiggle reached base on a bunt single. Weinzierl singled and Hoy reached base on an infield single, scoring Quiggle. Uhl reached base on an error, allowing Weinzierl to score. Bob Vollmer singled. Harshbarger hit into double play, erasing Vollmer but allowing Uhl to score, cutting the Punxsy lead to 9-5. The Chucks scored a run in the home half of the sixth on two hits to take a 10-5 lead.
The Dutchmen went down in order as Punxsy recorded the 10-5 victory to claim the District 9-AAA title.
