The St. Marys Legion baseball team came from behind last night to defeat the Smethport Legion by a 10-8 score in an Elk County Legion Baseball League game played at Berwind Park.
After four innings of play, Smethport held an 8-4 lead over St. Marys. The locals scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to record the victory.
“The first inning was disastrous for us. We just didn’t look good defensively,” said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi. “Don’t ask me what it takes to get us over the first inning hump.
“Pat Brennen did an excellent job holding Smethport in the final four innings. The players never gave up. I am proud of their efforts after having been down by seven runs in the first inning.”
“Jordan Weinzierl had a nice game at the plate,” added Pasi, noting that Weinzierl led the team, going four-for-four with two doubles and two singles.
St. Marys had 10 hits in the contest, with Weinzierl getting four of them. Ricky Pearsall had two singles, while Ryan Uhl had a double and a single. Eric Wehler doubled and Pat Brennen singled.
Luke Daghir started on the mound for St. Marys and worked three innings, giving up seven hits and striking out three. Pat Brennen worked four innings, giving up one hit and striking out seven.
Smethport opened the game by scoring seven runs on five hits. In the home half of the inning, Pearsall led off with a single. Luke Daghir was hit by a pitch and Kevin Hoy walked. A single by Uhl scored both Pearsall and Luke Daghir. Weinzierl followed with a single. With one out, Wehler hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Uhl to cut the Smethport lead to 7-3.
Smethport added a run in the top half of the second inning, making the score 8-3. St. Marys stranded a runner in their half of the inning.
Smethport left a man on in the third inning. In the home half of the inning, Uhl led off with a double. A single by Weinzierl scored Uhl to make the score 8-4.
The fourth inning saw Smethport leave two men on while St. Marys went down in order. Smethport went down in order in the top of the fifth. In the home half of the inning, Brennen singled and Hoy walked. With one out, Weinzierl doubled to score both Brennen and Hoy. With two outs, Wehler doubled to score Weinzierl and cut Smethport’s lead to 8-7.
The top of the sixth found Smethport going down in order. Jake Cortina opened the home half of the inning by being hit by a pitch. Pearsall singled and with two outs, Uhl walked. A double by Weinzierl emptied the bases to give St. Marys the 10-8 lead.
Smethport got their first runner on base in the top of the seventh. With one out, a double play ended the game with St. Marys on top 10-8.
St. Marys will host Bradford Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Berwind Park. This game was originally set for Bradford.
