David J. "Bud" Silvis, 86, of 152 Baumer Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the Pinecrest Manor after an illness of the past several months.
He was born on March 27, 1925, in St. Marys, the son of the late David and Irene Cheatle Silvis. In November 1949 at St. Agnes Episcopal Church, he married Loraine E. Overturf, who preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 1999.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was employed as a chemical engineer at the Stackpole Carbon Co., retiring in 1983.
Mr. Silvis was a member of the St. Agnes Episcopal Church and was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in WWII, and was the recipient of the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific two stars, Philippine Liberation two stars and two Purple Hearts. He enjoyed his McDonald's coffee club, his camp in Glen Hazel and gardening.
He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Thompson and her husband Roger R. of St. Marys; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Velma Dornish of State College and Iva Crimi and her husband Fred of Florida.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary G. Silvis, who died on March 20, 1980; and three sisters, Dorothy Brown, and in infancy Irene and Violet Silvis.
Funeral services for David J. "Bud" Silvis will be held in the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Saturday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Mary Norton officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Marys Protestant Cemetery.
Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
