The Punxsutawney 9-10-year-old Little League Baseball all-stars eliminated the St. Marys team Friday night by a 6-4 score in nine innings. The game was played at Memorial Park.
St. Marys finished play in the District 10 South Division Tournament with a 2-2 record.
St. Marys had eight hits in the contest. Jared Groll had a triple and a single while Jesse McKee, Nate Beimel and Alec Wehler each had a double and a single. Ryan Fritz also singled.
Alex Fedus started on the mound for St. Marys and worked four innings, giving up seven hits, walking one and striking out three. Brady Schneider worked one inning of relief, giving up two hits and walking two. Nate Beimel worked two innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out six. Jesse McKee worked two innings, giving up four hits, walking one and striking out two.
Logan Johnston started for Punxsy and worked three innings, giving up five hits, walking four and striking out one. Derek Huey worked five innings, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out three. Dylan Ishman worked one inning of scoreless relief.
St. Marys won the coin toss to be the home team.
Punxsy scored a run in the top of the first on four hits and left two men on base. In the home half of the inning, St. Marys stranded a runner.
Punxsy left two men on base, while St. Marys left one man on base in their half of the second inning.
The third inning saw Punxsy score a run in the top of the inning on a hit and an error to take a 2-0 lead. Jared Groll led off the home half of the inning with a triple. He was able to score on the play. McKee doubled and stole third. Alec Bittler walked. With one out, Beimel doubled to score McKee. A single by Fritz scored Bittler. Wimer reached base on a fielder’s choice, allowing Beimel to score as St. Marys took a 4-2 lead.
The fourth inning found both teams leaving a man stranded. In the top half of the fifth, Punxsy scored twice on two hits to knot the game at 4-all. St. Marys left two men on base.
After an infield single started the sixth inning for Punxsy, Beimel struck out the next three batters. St. Marys left a man on base in their half of the inning.
The seventh inning saw Beimel strike out the side in the top half of the inning, while St. Marys went down in order.
Despite a leadoff triple by Smith, the Punxsy squad did not score in the eighth. Brandon Sicheri led off the home half of the inning by reaching base on an error. With one out, Groll reached base on a bloop single. However, a flyout and a comebacker to the mound ended the St. Marys threat.
Punxsy scored two runs on three hits and left two men on base in the top of the ninth. St. Marys went down in order in their half of the inning as Punxsy advanced with the win. Punsxy meets the loser of last night’s DuBois vs. Brookville game on Tuesday at a site to be announced.
