Gertrude M. Brechtel, 87, a resident of the Lutheran Home in Kane and formerly of St. Marys and Wilcox, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, at the Lutheran Home after a lengthy illness.
She was born Jan. 30, 1924, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Leo and Margaret Breindel Rettger. Her first husband, Bernard Bartasavich, preceded her in death. In 1968, she married Arthur Brechtel, who preceded her in death in 1977.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1942. She also graduated from Villa Maria College in Erie. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Queen of the World School and St. Boniface School and in schools in Erie and Wilcox. She also had worked for the Pa. Forestry Department. She was a member of the St. Mary's Church, the Altar Society and the C.D. of A.
She is survived by a sister, Agnes Buchheit of St. Marys; and two brothers, Paul Rettger of Pittsburgh and Joseph Rettger of Massachusetts.
Besides her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Theresa Knouse, Sister M. Eileen Rettger, OSB, Margaret Rettger and in infancy, Marie Rettger; and by six brothers, Vincent, Leo, the Rev. Emmeran Rettger, OSB, Charles, George and Benedict Rettger.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude M. Brechtel will be ceclebrated in the St. Mary's Church on Wednesday, July 27 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Meinrad Lawson, OSB, as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
