The Ridgway Area School District held a special meeting Tuesday afternoon to appoint Dr. Michael O'Brien as the new superintendent.
Dr. Tom Butler attended his last RASD school board meeting to congratulate and welcome Dr. O'Brien to his new role with the school district.
"It's been a joy, this is a great school district and I know Dr. O'Brien and his wife will be welcomed to the community," Butler said. "You will have a great time."
The board voted unanimously in favor of appointing O'Brien as superintendent, effective Aug. 9, 2011 and ending Aug. 8, 2014, at a salary of $115,000.
Dr. O'Brien was working as a principal for eight years at New Oxford High School in Adams County. He received his undergraduate degree at York College of Pennsylvania in secondary education and general science, and earned a master's degree from Western Maryland University, Westminster, Md., in school administration. In addition, O'Brien is certified as an administrator for grades kindergarten through 12th and as a science supervisor. Dr. O'Brien also received his doctorate from Immaculata (Pa.) University.
"I know Dr. Butler has done a tremendous job here," O'Brien said. "Based on everything I have seen and researched, he has done an outstanding job here, which speaks well for the staff and the community as well. I just hope to follow in his footsteps and do a good job."
