R. Thomas Valentine, 87, of 327 Chestnut St., St. Marys, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at his home following an illness of the past year.
He was born Jan. 29, 1924 in St. Marys, son of the late William and Minnie Cable Valentine. On Nov. 11, 1967, in the Queen of the World Church, he married Mary Rita Eckl, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of the St. Marys High School. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company, retiring in 1985 after 42 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Viola Struble, Helen Wolf, Bonita Marrone and Theresa Cuneo; and three brothers, William Valentine, Jack Valentine and Henry "Burr" Valentine. He was the last member of his immediate family.
He was a member of the Queen of the World Church and a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army in Rhineland and Central Europe. He was the recipient of the Victory Medal, the Combat Infantry Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, and was a POW. He enjoyed photography, having worked on area weddings, and also enjoyed walking around town.
A Mass of Christian Burial for R. Thomas Valentine will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at noon, with the Rev. Michael Ferrick, pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
The family will greet visitors at Queen of the World Church on Friday at 11 a.m. until Mass at noon.
