The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the Sheffield Lady Wolverines last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Dutch took the first game 25-16. They won the second game 25-14 and took the third game 25-18 to win the match in three straight.
St. Marys took a 1-0 lead as they scored off the Sheffield serve. With Lauren Dalessandro serving, St. Marys went up 5-0. Dalessandro had one ace, Kristen Anderson a kill and Abbey Cribbs a block. St. Marys got the serve back off a kill by Sami Hanes. With Cribbs serving, St. Marys took a 10-3 lead. The teams traded points back and forth as St. Marys led 13-7. With Hanes serving, the Lady Dutch went up 17-7 before Sheffield got the serve back. With Taylor Bellina serving, St. Marys went up 20-11. St. Marys was leading 22-15 with Anderson serving when Bellina got a kill, 23-15. St. Marys made it 24-16, then a kill by Chelsie Gaton made the final score 25-16.
Game two saw the teams battle back and forth early. Leading 12-7, St. Marys took a 19-7 lead with Dalessandro serving. Sheffield closed the gap to 21-11 before the Lady Dutch went on to win 25-14.
The third game was the closest one of the night as Sheffield battled. After St. Marys opened an 11-5 lead, the Lady Wolverines would claw their way back into the match to trail 19-16. The Lady Dutch won the serve at that point. Anderson served two aces, Bellina got a kill, and another ace by Anderson made it 23-16. Sheffield cut the lead to 24-18. A kill by Gaton made the final score 25-18 in favor of St. Marys.
“Lauren Dalessandro got the game ball tonight for her play,” said St. Marys coach Erica Vogt. “She had 15 service points and picked up a lot of balls in her coverage.
“Overall, we played relaxed and smart. Every single person did their job tonight.”
Sami Hanes finished with 27 assists and four kills. Kristen Anderson had seven kills, while Taylor Bellina and Chelsie Gaton had five each.
The St. Marys junior varsity squad lost in two to the Lady Wolverines.
St. Marys will travel to Ridgway Thursday for a match with the Lady Elkers. Junior varsity begins at 6 p.m., with varsity to follow.
