In celebration of National Dog Week, The Elk County Humane Society is hosting its annual K9 Karnival featuring Walk and Wag Day on Saturday afternoon at Benzinger Park in St. Marys.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., canines of all kinds are invited to participate in the event. Registration begins at 11 a.m., with the walk taking place at noon.
"It's just a great, fun day for the whole family, including the four-legged members. All the animals have smiles on their faces," said Veronica Conrad, humane society founder and current board member.
There is an entry fee for the event. Although participants may pay the fee that day, they are encouraged to get pledges and sponsors for their pet.
The pet owner who raises the most pledges will receive a prize. Those bringing in $35 or more in pledges will receive a gift package.
Registration forms are available at the shelter or on the website at www.elkcountyhumanesociety.org .
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event, which raised $2,000 last year for the organization. A 15-member fundraising committee works to coordinate the event.
Among the canine-friendly activities are games for both pets and their owners.
In addition to "paw"traits artwork, where dogs dip their paws into paint, then place them on a canvas, canines can also have their toenails painted, create a keepsake plaster pawprint, play "Bark Place" -- a dog version of Monopoly, dive into the straw pile to find lost treasures such as bones or bob for hot dogs.
