RIMERSBURG - The Union Golden Knights handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 25-7 Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference setback last night at Rimersburg.
The Dutchmen found themselves down 19-0 at the half and were not able to get out of the hole in the second half.
“I give Union all the credit. They outplayed us in every facet. They were well-coached and well-prepared,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm.
“We didn’t handle adversity early in the ball game. We had to play catch-up and we’re not very good at that game,” he added.
The Dutch offense was led by Cody Baker with 96 yards on 18 carries. Quarterback Justin Quiggle was five-of-12 for 59 yards with two interceptions.
Union was led by Austin Davis with 136 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Taylor Smith gained 66 yards on 11 carries and was seven-of-13 for 104 yards through the air.
St. Marys won the coin toss but elected to defer to the second half.
Union took the opening kickoff and marched 73 yards on 10 plays, with Smith hitting Brody Pollock with a 15-yard touchdown pass. The try for two was wide and the Knights led 6-0 with 6:47 left in the first period.
The Dutchmen’s next possession was halted by an interception by Union’s Aaron Graham. However, Union was forced to punt on their next possession.
The Dutch punted on their next possession, with the Knights taking over on their own 30-yard line. Union returned the favor and punted the ball back to the Dutch as St. Marys took over on their own 25.
St. Marys got as far as their own 45 when on a second-down play, Union’s Kaden McGregor intercepted a pass on the 34 and returned it to the St. Marys’ five-yard line. Two plays later, Smith scored on a five-yard run as the Knights led 12-0 with 7:29 left as the try for two failed.
Dutchman Sam Guido took the Union kickoff and returned it 69 yards to the Union 16-yard line. On first down, the Dutch fumbled with Union taking over on their own 11. The Knights drove 89 yards for the touchdown as Smith found Pollock in the endzone for a 23-yard touchdown pass, giving Union an 18-0 lead. Keenan Rankin kicked the PAT to make it 19-0 with 3:17 left in the first half.
The teams traded punts as the first half ended.
St. Marys got as far as Union’s 45-yard line on the first possession of the second half before punting. The ball was downed at the Union eight-yard line. Davis picked up a yard on first down. On second down, Dutchman Luke Schreiber recovered a Union fumble on the seven-yard line. Baker scored from seven yards out on first down. Scott Barber added the PAT, making the score 19-7 with eight minutes left in the third period.
Union punted on their next possession with St. Marys turning the ball over on downs. The teams traded punts as the fourth quarter began. The Knights took over on the Dutchmen’s 49-yard line following a 40-yard punt by Quiggle.
Five plays later, Davis scored on a 35-yard run, giving Union the 25-7 lead with 8:32 left in the game.
St. Marys started on their own 36-yard line after the kick was covered by Dutchman Alex Coudriet. After an incomplete pass on first down, Baker gained 10 to the 46. He added six more on third down. He gained nine yards on first down, with Guido picking up seven yards to the 32 of Union and a first down. Baker picked up seven to the 25, with Merritt getting four more to the 21. A motion penalty moved it back to the 26. Baker gained four yards on first down. A holding penalty moved the ball back to the 31. After an incomplete pass on second down, Merritt gained nine to the 22. The fourth-down run by Quiggle came up short as Union took over.
Union picked up three first downs and was able to run out the clock to preserve their 25-7 victory.
The Dutchmen are now 5-3 on the year. They are 2-1 in the KSAC Large School Division.
St. Marys will close out their regular season next Friday when they travel to Karns City for a KSAC Large School Division game with the Gremlins. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
