KARNS CITY - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team closed out their regular season Friday night at Karns City, where the Gremlins downed the Dutch by a 33-21 score.
The Gremlins built a 20-6 first-half lead and led 33-6 after three quarters. The Dutch were able to put 15 points on the board in the final eight minutes of the contest.
“We played with a lot of effort,” said St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm. “We’re undermanned right now. Hopefully our season isn’t over and hopefully we can get healthy for the playoffs, but right now I don’t know.”
“Karns City is a good ball team. We just couldn’t stop them. But we played hard right to the last second,” Schlimm added.
The St. Marys offense was led by Cody Baker with 101 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Alex Coudriet was four-of-seven for 15 yards while quarterback Justin Quiggle was three-of-10 for 18 yards.
Karns City was led by Glenn Toy with 144 yards on 14 carries. Alex Kinkela finished with 118 yards on seven carries. Quarterback Tyler Kepple was three-for-four for 76 yards with one interception. Quarterback Brady Ellenberger was 0-2 with two interceptions.
Getting the interceptions for the Dutch were Quiggle with two and Christian Keller with one. Colby Mahovlich recovered an onside kick for the Dutchmen.
St. Marys went three and out on their first possession. Karns City didn’t take long to get on the board, traveling 75 yards on seven plays with Toy going the final five as the Gremlins led 6-0 with 7:24 left in the first quarter. The try for two failed.
The Dutch punted on their next possession, with Karns City turning the ball over via an interception by Quiggle on their next possession. St. Marys was forced to punt again with Karns City taking over on their own 14-yard line. They moved to the Dutch 30 as the first period ended.
On the second play of the second quarter, Toy scored from 18 yards out. Adam Garing added the PAT as Karns City led 13-0 with 11:45 left before halftime.
A 14-yard punt by the Dutch gave the Gremlins the ball on the St. Marys 47. Mahovlich threw Kepple for a seven-yard loss on first down. Toy gained 22 to the St. Marys 32-yard line. Fullback Alex Kinkela went up the middle for the final 32 yards and a touchdown as the Gremlins led 20-0 with 8:34 left in the half as Garing added the PAT.
The Dutch started a drive from their own 34. Primarily behind the running of Baker, St. Marys moved down to the Karns City 20, where they ran out of downs. Baker carried the ball on nine plays of the 13-play drive.
Karns City took over on their own 20. Toy gained a yard on first down. A holding penalty on second down moved the ball back to the 11. On the next play, Dutch defensive lineman Christian Keller intercepted a pass at the Karns City five and returned it to the one. Baker went the final yard, making the score 20-6 as the PAT failed with 24 seconds left in the half.
Mahovlich recovered the onside kick for St. Marys. The Dutch ran three plays before the half ended, 20-6.
Karns City scored on their third play of the second half as Kinkela went in from 27 yards out. Garing made the score 27-6 with 10:51 left in the third period.
The Dutch moved from their own 23 to the Karns City 47 before being forced to punt. Quiggle halted the next Gremlin possession with an interception. St. Marys was forced to punt the next time they had the ball. Karns City started from their own 22 and eight plays later, Kepple scored from two yards out, making the score 33-6 as the PAT failed with 32 seconds left in the third period.
After Guido returned the kickoff from his own 21 to his 35, Luke Schreiber gained two yards to the 37 as the third period ended. Quiggle hit Guido with a six-yard pass to the 43 and Baker gained 17 to the Karns City 40. Coudriet found Guido for a seven-yard play to the 33. Baker gained four yards and a first down. After an incomplete pass, Quiggle gained nine to the 20. Coudriet picked up two to the 18 and a first down. Quiggle got a yard to the 17. After an incomplete pass, Quiggle gained 10 yards to the seven. Quiggle got two yards on first down and four on second down to the one. Baker went the final yard for a touchdown, making the score 33-12. Barber’s PAT made it 33-13 with 8:09 left in the game.
Karns City moved from their own 29 to the Dutch 29 on nine plays, where they fumbled and Quiggle recovered. The Dutch, aided by three penalties, moved from their own 29 to the Karns City four on 14 plays. Coudriet found Quiggle in the endzone with 13 seconds left to make the score 33-19. Guido converted the two-point PAT, making the final score 33-21 in favor of the Gremlins.
The Dutch finished their regular season with a 5-4 record. They were 5-3 in the KSAC and 2-2 in the KSAC Large School Division.
As of right now, the Dutch will meet the Clearfield Bisons for the District 9-AAA championship the weekend of Nov. 11-12. St. Marys’ week 10 opponent, Brockway, will be playing in the Allegheny Mountain League championship game next weekend with their 44-7 victory over Kane last night.
The Bradford Owls lost to Erie Strong Vincent 27-10 last night. Bradford was in the running for the AAA playoff spot.
