The Keystone Lady Panthers defeated the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch varsity basketball team 75-40 on Saturday evening to claim the 2011 St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Girls' Basketball Tournament title.
Keystone jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The team was up 24-11 at the end of the first quarter, 40-23 at the half, and 58-28 at the end of three quarters.
"Like I said (Friday), Keystone is a good ball club. We struggled. We had some points that we struggled there. Defensively, the girls worked hard. [Keystone] is just a good ball team, and when we're not playing five girls as a unit then there's some breakdowns in there," said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli.
St. Marys was once again led offensively by junior Adair Gennocro, who accounted for 13 of the team's points on three twos, one three, and a four-for-four night from the foul line. Senior Jenna Anderson added 11 points on one two and three threes.
Keystone was led by Morgan Johnson with 21 points on seven twos, one three, and a four-for-four night from the foul line.
St. Marys scored first in the contest on a bucket by Kiana Hoohuli. After the Lady Panthers evened the score, a bucket by Gennocro briefly put the Lady Dutch back in front; however, their lead was short-lived as Keystone quickly added six more points to take an 8-4 lead. A three by Anderson brought the Lady Dutch back within a point of the lead, but this was as close as they would get the rest of the evening. Keystone went on a 13-point run that left them with a 21-7 advantage with about two and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter. Gennocro added two foul shots for the Lady Dutch and Becky Krieg made a bucket with just over a minute remaining. A three at the end of the quarter by Johnson made the score 24-11 with three quarters left to play.
The Lady Panthers went on a nine-point run to start the second quarter and the Lady Dutch were held scoreless until DeAnna Yost made a bucket with about 5:13 remaining in the half to make the score 30-16. After six more points by Keystone, Gennocro scored a three and a two on back-to-back possessions to cut Keystone's advantage to 36-21. The Lady Panthers then added four more points of their own before Hoohuli ended the half by sinking a pair of foul shots to make the score 40-23 in favor of Keystone.
St. Marys scored their only points of the third quarter within the first minute of play on a three by Anderson and a bucket by Krieg to cut Keystone's lead to 40-28. Keystone then held them scoreless for the remainder of the quarter while adding another 18 points of their own to make the score 58-28 headed into the final quarter of play.
Buckets by Anderson, Cribbs and Krieg started out the fourth quarter with six more points for the Lady Dutch. After another Keystone bucket, Gennocro added a pair of foul shots and Cribbs had another bucket to make the score 60-38 with just over four minutes to play. Keystone then ran up 12 more points before Gennocro scored the final bucket for St. Marys with just over a minute remaining. A foul shot and a bucket for Keystone gave the Lady Panthers a 75-40 victory.
Both Gennocro and Yost were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Keystone's Courtney Greathouse, Coudersport's Delanie Cowburn, and DCC's Lauresa Gulvas. The Defensive MVP award was given to Keystone's Madison Johnson while Morgan Johnson, also from Keystone, was the Offensive MVP.
