Mary R. (Mae) Sorg, 93, of 412 Brusselles St., St. Marys, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1918 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude Schreiber Hammer.
On Dec. 27, 1950 in St. Benedict's Church in Daguschonda, she married Francis Xavier (Frank) Sorg, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1979.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1937. She had been employed by the Stackpole Carbon Co. in the accounting office until her marriage.
Mrs. Sorg was a member of the Queen of the World Church, the Rosary Altar Society, a 50-year member of the C.D. of A., was a Den Mother and active in scouting for many years, and did volunteer work at the Queen of the World Church and Elk County Catholic High School in its early years. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing bridge and crocheting.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. Paulinus Joseph Sorg of Kane, Francis X. Sorg and his wife Vicki of Allentown, and Thaddeus J. Sorg and his wife Angela of St. Marys; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Sorg of Ashtabula, Ohio; and seven grandchildren, Evie Boggs, Patrick Sorg, Thomas Sorg, Adrienne Sorg, Rachel Sorg, Jacqueline Sorg and Maggie Sorg.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Rembert J. Sorg, on Dec. 6, 2003; four sisters, Lucille Harkens, Rita Eberl, Leona Hauber and Grace Mills; and by five brothers, the Rev. Paulinus Hammer, OSB, Chester Hammer, William Hammer, Edward Hammer and her twin brother, Raymond Hammer. She was the last member of her immediate family.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary R. (Mae) Sorg will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at noon, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
