The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders advanced to tonight’s Allegheny Mountain League championship game with a 43-26 victory over the Brockway Lady Rovers last night at the ECCHS gym.
Elk Catholic will meet the Kane Lady Wolves, who defeated the DuBois Central Lady Cardinals 53-47 last night at DuBois Central.
Last night at the ECCHS gym the Lady Crusaders opened a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, then scored the first eight points of the second period to take a 20-4 lead before Brockway could get on the board in the second eight minute stanza.
“At times we played well tonight and at times we played sloppy,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. “Tonight was a good opportunity to get playing time for everyone.”
“We’re looking forward to playing in the AML title game tomorrow night,” added Pistner.
The Lady Crusader offense was led by Abbi Petrosky with 11 points on five field goals and a two-for-four night from the foul line. Taylor DaCanal scored 10 points on five field goals and a one-for-two night from the foul line.
Brockway was led by Sara Guilyard with eight points on three field goals and a two-for-six night from the foul line. Juliana Esposito scored six points on two field goals and a two-for-three night from the foul line.
Petrosky gave Elk the early 4-0 lead. Ann Moyer scored for Brockway, 4-2. ECC went on a 8-0 run as Kristy Hanes and DaCanal each scored four points. Guilyard sank two foul shots for the Lady Rovers as the Lady Crusaders led 12-4 at the end of the first period.
The Lady Crusaders scored the first eight points of the second period. Petrosky had two buckets and Lexie Meholic and Jena Struble one each, 20-4. Brockway scored six points on four foul shots and a field goal to make it 20-10 with 56 seconds remaining. Elk’s Michelle Imbrogno scored off a steal with five seconds remaining to give ECC the 22-10 halftime lead.
Brockway scored the opening points of the second half on a bucket by Guilyard, 22-12. Elk went on a 9-0 run as DaCanal scored six, Meholic two and Petrosky one, 31-12. Guilyard made the score 31-14 at the 1:35 mark. A bucket by Juliana Esposito with one second left made the score 31-16 at the end of three quarters.
Alexandra Wright scored for Brockway to open the fourth quarter. Petrosky and Hanes scored for Elk, 35-18. A foul shot by Juliana Vokes and a field goal by Esposito made the score 35-21. Maggie Sorg and Macy Neureiter scored for Elk, 39-21. Savannah Brosky scored for Brockway, 39-23. Neureiter sank two foul shots and added a field goal as Elk led 43-23. A three by Brockway’s Samantha Gould with seven seconds left made the final score 43-26 in favor of Elk Catholic.
The Lady Crusaders are now 20-3 on the season.
Tonight’s championship game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the St. Marys Area High School.
The boys’ championship game between Ridgway and Johnsonburg is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.
