St. Marys eliminates Clearfield 59-48
HYDE - The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch basketball team advanced to the District 9-AAA championship game by defeating the Clearfield Lady Bisons 59-48 last night at the Clearfield Area High School. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, March 3 at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin gymnasium at a time to be announced.
The Lady Dutch will meet the winner of tonight’s Punxsutawney at Bradford game.
The Lady Dutch struggled in the first half but were able to stay in the contest, only trailing 25-19 at the half. In the second 16 minutes of play, St. Marys outscored Clearfield by a 40-23 margin to win the game.
“The fact that we took care of the basketball and played some great defense were the keys to the game,” said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli. “Rachel Krieg did a nice job on the boards tonight as she had 13 rebounds. Kiana (Hoohuli) and Jenna (Anderson) were able to hit some shots in the first half to keep us in the game.”
“We’re excited to get back to the title game,” added Hoohuli.
The Lady Dutch were led offensively by Adair Gennocro with 21 points on on seven field goals and a seven-for-seven night from the foul line. All seven of Adair’s foul shots came in the fourth quarter. She scored 19 points in the second half. Kiana Hoohuli scored 14 points on four threes and a two-for-two night from the foul line.
Clearfield was led by Breanna Peters with 14 points on six field goals and a two-for-four night from the foul line. Lisa Ambuski and Dakota Farmery each scored 12 points. Ambuski scored her points on two twos, one three and a five-for-seven night from the foul line. Farmery scored her points on six field goals.
Peters gave Clearfield the early 4-0 lead on two field goals. Hoohuli connected on a three before Rachel Thompson scored for the Lady Bisons. Sloan Foster sank one of two foul shots before Peters and Thompson scored for Clearfield, 10-4. Hoohuli hit a three and Gennocro a two, 10-9. Ambuski converted a three-point play to give Clearfield a 13-9 lead. Hoohuli hit a three with six seconds left to cut the Clearfield lead to 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Farmery scored for Clearfield to open the second quarter. Anderson cut the Clearfield lead to 15-14 with a two. Clearfield scored four points to take a 19-14 lead. Anderson and Peters traded field goals. Cassie Daniels hit a three for St. Marys, 21-19. Farmery scored the final points of the first half as Clearfield led 25-19.
Hoohuli hit a three to start the second half. Foster hit a field goal to cut the Lady Bisons’ lead to 25-24. The Lady Bisons went on a 6-0 run to lead 31-24. Anderson hit a three, 31-27. Kristen Butler scored for Clearfield, 33-27. Gennocro and Rachel Krieg scored for the Lady Dutch, 33-331. Peters and Gennocro traded buckets as the quarter ended with Clearfield on top 35-33.
St. Marys came out and scored the first four points as Rachel Krieg converted two foul shots and DeAnna Yost’s field goal gave St. Marys their first lead of the game, 37-35 with 7:14 left. Farmery tied the game at 37. Gennocro scored a field goal, then converted a three-point play to give St. Marys a 42-39 lead with 6:08 left. With 5:14, left, Foster sank two foul shots. Clearfield scored twice before Foster scored as St. Marys led 46-39. The teams exchanged possessions when Gennocro converted a three-point play off a steal as St. Marys led 49-39 with 3:48 left. Clearfield cut the Lady Dutch lead to 49-44 with 2:45 left. Gennocro converted another three-point play, 52-44. Thompson scored for Clearfield. Foster started a Lady Dutch run by sinking a foul shot with 1:37 left. Hoohuli and Gennocro each converted two foul shots as St. Marys increased their lead to 57-46 with 1:09 left. Ambuski scored for Clearfield at the 57-second mark. Gennocro and Hoohuli then played keep-away, with Gennocro being fouled with 32 seconds left. She converted both, making the final score 59-38 in favor of the Lady Dutch.
St. Marys is now 11-12 on the season.
The Lady Dutch take on the winner of tonight’s fourth-seeded Punxsy at number-one seed Bradford game for the District 9-AAA championship. St. Marys was the third seed and Clearfield was the second seed.
