The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team improved their record to 10-0 on the season with a 10-0 victory in six innings over the visiting Ridgway Lady Elkers Wednesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
The Lady Crusaders scored seven runs in the home half of the sixth inning to put the game away with the 10-run mercy rule in effect.
“We were a little rusty after the week off,” said ECCHS coach Joe Coroso. “Taylor Schlimm threw another gem and Jessie Ginther had the only extra base hit of the contest. Everyone hit the ball hard and sometimes that’s all you can ask.”
“Mackenzie Neureiter had the play of the day with a diving catch of a line drive at second base to double up the runner at first base in the first in the fifth inning,” added Coroso.
Taylor Schlimm went the distance for the Lady Crusaders, striking out 12 and hitting one batter. Taylor Roseto started on the mound for Ridgway and worked four innings, giving up two hits, walking five and striking out two. Jenna Hoffman worked 1 2/3 innings of relief, giving up four hits and walking three.
Jessie Ginther led the ECC offense with a home run and a single. Michelle Imbrogno, Kristy Hanes, Taylor DaCanal and Stephanie Zimmerman each had a single for ECC.
“Our defense played well overall,” said Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II. “Taylor (Roseto) got hurt in the fifth inning and our defense seemed to quit when we changed pitchers.”
“We didn’t hit the ball well. She’s (Schlimm) a good pitcher and they’re (ECC) a good team. You can’t give them any extra outs,” added Gerber.
The Lady Elkers went down in order in the top of the first, with Elk Catholic stranding two in their half of the inning.
The second inning saw Ashley Viglione reach base on an error. She was doubled off first when Elk’s Mackenzie Neureiter made a diving catch of a Sam Kovalyak line drive to halt the threat. The next batter struck out. Elk left a runner on base in their half of the inning.
Schlimm struck out the side in the top of the third. Ginther led off the home half of the third with a home run to left. Imbrogno walked and Hanes reached base on an error, scoring Imbrogno. Schlimm walked and Lyndsey Trumbull reached base on an error, scoring courtesy runner Maddy Schneider. With runners on first and third, Schlimm broke to steal second. The throw from Ridgway catcher Sam Kovalyak went to shortstop Jenni Thomas, who ran at Schlimm to make the tag. She then threw to Kovalyak to get the runner, attempting to score from third. A fielder’s choice ended the ECC inning.
The fourth inning found Ridgway leave a runner on base. Elk Catholic left two runners stranded in their half of the inning. Ridgway went in order in the fifth, while a double play helped Ridgway put ECC down in order in their half of the inning.
With one out, Hoffman was hit by a pitch in the top of the sixth for Ridgway. She was left stranded. In the home half of the inning, Taylor DaCanal singled for ECC. Stephanie Zimmerman singled. Both advanced on a throwing error. With one out, Ginther doubled, scoring DaCanal and Zimmerman. Imbrogno walked and Hanes singled, scoring both Ginther and Imbrogno. A sacrifice fly to center scored Schneider. Trumbull walked and Stauffer reached base on an error. DaCanal walked to load the bases. Zimmerman reached base on an error, allowing Trumbull and Stauffer to score, giving Elk Catholic the 10-0 victory.
The Lady Crusaders are scheduled to travel to Brockway this afternoon for a 4:15 p.m. game.
