BROCKWAY - The Punxsutawney Chucks scored five runs in the home half of the first inning on their way to a 6-0 victory over the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch Wednesday afternoon in the District 9 Class AAA championship game, played at Brockway Area High School.
The Chucks used three hits and two St. Marys errors to score those five first-inning runs.
“It was a tough day for us to go cold,” said St. Marys coach Tony Azzato. “We didn’t get the hits when we needed to and when we did hit the ball, it was right at them.”
“We gave ourselves opportunities we just didn’t capitalize [on],” said Azzato.
Quinn Cunningham started on the mound for the Dutch and worked 1 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and walking three. Justin Beimel worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, walking one and striking out four. Jamie Bush went the distance for the Chucks, giving up three hits, walking two and striking out five.
“I thought Quinn (Cunningham) threw great today. He did what we wanted him to do. Justin Beimel came in big, too. He had the bases loaded and got out of it,” said Azzato.
“Errors came back to bit us big,” he added.
Getting the hits for the Dutch were Robert Watts, Alexx Tyger and Luke Schreiber, all with singles.
The Dutch went down in order in the top half of the first inning. In the home half of the inning, the Chucks scored five times on three hits and two errors. One of those hits was a two-run home run by Ty Zimmerman.
With two outs in the top half of the second, Watts reached base on an infield single but was left stranded. The Chucks left the bases loaded in the home half of the inning.
Cunningham walked and Schreiber singled to start the third inning for the Dutch. With one out, Dalton Kline reached base on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. The next two batters went down in order. The Chucks went down in order in their half of the inning.
St. Marys went down in order in the top half of the fourth inning. The Chucks left two men on base in their half of the inning. The Dutch left a man on base, as Mitchell Meyer walked with two outs in the top half of the fifth inning. In the home half of the inning, Punxsy scored a run on two hits and left two men on base to take a 6-0 lead.
Each team went down in order in the sixth inning. With two outs, Alexx Tyger reached base on an infield single for St. Marys, but was left stranded as the Chucks registered the 6-0 victory.
“I wish all the seniors good luck,” said Azzato.
Senior members of the Dutch squad are Mitchell Meyer, Dalton Kline, Branden Tyger, David Aul, Robert Watts, Jerri Newell and Luke Schreiber.
The Dutchmen finished their season with a 9-12 record.
