Celebrate, remember, fight back are the three inspirational words associated with the 2012 Relay for Life of Elk County running from noon on Friday, June 8 to noon on Saturday, June 9 at the Fox Township Community Park in Kersey.
A new activity at this year's relay is the talent show scheduled from 7-11 a.m. Saturday on the park's stage. Registration will take place from 6-7 a.m. on a first-come basis. First-, second- and third-place trophies will be awarded in each age group of 5-9, 10-17 and 18 to adult.
There is a five-minute time limit per act, which is limited to no more than five members in a group. A contestant can only enter one act and there is a $10 cost to enter, with all proceeds benefitting the relay.
Also not allowed are lip synching and bands; recorded tracks may not include lead vocals. The only equipment being provided are a CD player with speakers and two microphones.
Also new this year is the Caregivers' Tree, organized by event committee member Kari Ryan.
"The tree celebrates survivors and their caregivers," Ryan said.
She added Team SMP (St. Marys Pharmacy) is selling wooden angels for $2, which may be decorated with a Sharpie. Before the survivors' lap, angels should be placed on the tree, which will be displayed onstage. Angels may then be removed from the tree or left on it.
Rita Relay, the event's new mascot, being portrayed by Theresa Eberl, a 10-year cancer survivor, will be greeting those in attendance at the relay.
While the relay kicks off at noon on Friday, the opening ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Following the performance of the national anthem by Brent Bartlett, the Rev. Mary Norton will offer an invocation. Survivor Roben Daghir is acting as the ceremony's emcee. The ceremony also features a speech from survivor speaker Patty Greene.
John Schlimm and Mary Anderson, co-chairs of Team Straub, will present a tree at the park in remembrance of the late Terry Dietrick, former relay chairman and team member. Next, current Relay for Life Chairman Bill Babik will introduce each of the teams.
