John W. "Jack" Hanes, 82, of 121 Poplar Rd., St. Marys, died on Thursday, June 7, 2012 following a brief illness.
He was born July 1, 1929 in St. Marys, a son of the late Raphael "Ralph" and Kathryn Samick Hanes. On April 15, 1999, he married Betty Dornich Erich Hanes, who survives.
Mr. Hanes was a member of Sacred Heart Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from Keystone after more than 46 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose, and had also enjoyed being a member of the Polka Boosters for many years. He enjoyed going to camp and spending time at the Senior Center playing Wii bowling. He also enjoyed his faithful dog, Roxy.
In addition to his wife, Betty Dornich Erich Hanes, he is survived by a son, Kevin Hanes and his wife Nancy of St. Marys; four stepdaughters, Yvonne, Mrs. Eugene Hooper of St. Marys; Leah Erich of St. Marys; Susan, Mrs. George Wendel of St. Marys; and Mary Kay, Mrs. Ernest Kronenwetter of St. Marys; two stepsons, Charles R. Erich and his wife Anna of Lexington, K.Y.; a stepson, James Moyer of Kersey; two grandchildren, Heather and Crystal Hanes; 12 step-grandchildren; and 25 step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marion Fannin Herzing Hanes, whom he married on May 19, 1963. She preceded him in death on March 7, 1998. He was also preceded in death by a stepdaughter, M. Marilyn Herzing; a stepson, Michael Herzing; two granddaughters, Caylee and Cara Hanes in infancy; four brothers, Lavern, Thomas, Casper and Paul Hanes; and five sisters, Eileen Boylan, Calista Sorg, Iona Shields, Louise "Lucille" Meyer and Martha Hanes.
Relatives and friends of John W. "Jack" Hanes are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 325 Center St., on Monday, June 11, 2012 at noon, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, O.S.B., as celebrant. Military honors will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail.
There will be No Visitation.
