Locals meet Warren tonight at Benzinger Park
The St. Marys Little League Softball Major League All-Star squad stayed alive in the District 10 tournament with a 26-0, four-inning victory over the Brockway squad Saturday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
The St. Marys squad will meet Warren this evening at 6 p.m. at Benzinger Park in an elimination game. Warren eliminated Brookville by a 3-2 score Saturday afternoon.
The St. Marys squad pounded out 22 hits in Saturday’s game. Olivia Catalone had a triple and three singles, Maggie Dinsmore and Josie Smith each had four singles and Rebekka Bauer had three singles. Morgan Krug had two triples, while Rachelle Armanini had two singles. Getting one single each were Maddison LeGrys, Micayla Bothun and Leah Gabler.
Rebekka Bauer went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out seven. Hailey Shute went the distance for Brockway, giving up 22 hits, walking three and striking out three.
St. Marys lost the coin toss and were the visitors on the scoreboard.
In the top of the first, St. Marys left a runner stranded. In the home half of the inning, Brockway also left a runner stranded.
LeGrys led off the top of the second with a walk. She stole second with Bothun also reaching on a walk. Bauer reached base on a fielder’s choice and Armanini reached base on an error, scoring LeGrys. A single by Smith scored both Bothun and Bauer. A single by Catalone scored Armanini. Sydney Eckert reached base on an error, scoring Smith. A triple by Krug scored both Catalone and Eckert. Dinsmore’s single scored Krug. With one out, Bothun reached base on a bunt single. A single by Bauer scored Dinsmore. Armanini hit into an infield out, scoring Bothun. Smith and Catalone both singled, with Bauer scoring on Catalone’s single to give St. Marys the 11-0 lead. Brockway left a runner on base as Janel Grecco had walked, but was left stranded.
In the top of the second, Dinsmore singled and moved to second on a passed ball. With one out, Bothun reached base on a dropped third strike and moved to second on a throwing error on the play, sending Dinsmore to third. A single by Bauer scored Dinsmore. An infield out scored Bothun. Smith reached second in an infield single. Bauer was able to score on a passed ball, with Smith moving to second on the play. A triple by Olivia Catalone cleaned the bases, scoring Smith. Eckert reached base on an error, scoring Catalone. A triple by Krug scored Eckert. A single by Dinsmore scored Krug as St. Marys went up 18-0. Brockway saw Haley Frey receive a walk. With two outs, Kaitlyn Morelli singled but both were left stranded.
St. Marys added eight more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Bauer led off by reaching base on an error. She moved to second and third on passed balls. Armanini reached base on an infield single. A single by Smith scored Bauer. Catalone reached base on error, scoring both Armanini and Smith. Eckert reached base on an error, scoring Catalone. An infield out scored Eckert. Dinsmore singled. With two outs, Gabler singled to score Dinsmore. Back-to-back singles by Bauer and Armanini scored Gabler. Smith reached base on an error. A single by Catalone scored Bauer, giving St. Marys the 26-0 lead. In the home half of the inning, Brockway went down in order as St. Marys stayed alive in the loser’s bracket with the 26-0 win.
