Will meet Ridgway Saturday at Memorial Park
The St. Marys Little League Baseball Major League all-star squad suffered an 11-6 loss at the hands of the Punxsutawney squad last night at Memorial Park.
St. Marys now falls into the loser’s bracket, where they will meet Ridgway on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Memorial Park.
In last night’s game, both teams had 10 hits. Getting the hits for the St. Marys squad were Tim Wehler and Hayden Tettis, both with a double and a single. Gabe Kraus had two singles while Brendon Rolley, Alec Wehler, Ryan Heary and Logan Hoffman each singled.
Nate Beimel started on the mound for St. Marys, working two innings, giving up five hits, walking one and striking out two. Ryan Heary worked three innings, giving up two hits, walking three and striking out three. Tim Wehler worked one inning, giving up one hit.
For Punxsutawney, Tyler Richardson started on the mound, working 1 2/3 innings and giving up six hits. Brandon Matthews worked three innings, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out three. Sammy Gigliotti worked 1 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out two.
St. Marys won the coin toss and elected to be the home team.
In the top half of the first inning, Punxsutawney got on the board on one hit and two errors to take the early 1-0 lead. St. Marys responded in the home half of the inning, when Brendon Rolley singled to left with one out. Ryan Heary followed with a single, as did Gabe Kraus. With two outs, Hayden Tettis doubled to left center, scoring both Rolley and Heary as St. Marys took the 2-1 lead.
In the top of the second inning, Punxsy’s Zander Neal led off with a home run. Punxsy would score two runs on two hits and error to take a 3-2 lead. In the home half of the inning, Austin Sadosky was hit by a pitch with one out. Tim Wehler reached base on a bunt single and Alec Wehler singled to load the bases. Sadosky got caught in a rundown for the second out and a strikeout ended the St. Marys threat.
Punxsutawney erupted for seven runs on five hits and two errors in the top of the third inning to open a 10-2 lead. St. Marys scored a run in the home half of the inning when Kraus walked and stole second. A single by Logan Hoffman scored Kraus to make the score 10-3.
Punxsy left a runner stranded in the top of the fourth inning. St. Marys went down in order in their half of the inning. Punxsy added a run in the fifth to take an 11-3 lead. St. Marys left a runner stranded in the home half of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Punxsy left a runner stranded. In the home half of the inning, Tim Wehler doubled with one out. He moved to third on a passed ball. Rolley drew a walk and stole second. Heary reached base on an error, scoring Wehler. A single by Kraus scored Rolley. Tim Beimel reached base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Heary to make the final score 11-6 in favor of Punxsutawney.
