The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch soccer team held off the Coudersport Falcons by a 3-2 score Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field to raise their record to 12-3-2 on the season.
St. Marys honored their senior players along with their parents in halftime ceremonies.
The first half of Thursday’s match saw the Dutchmen take control of the first half. The Dutch had seven shots to two by the Falcons. St. Marys also had five corner kicks.
The Dutch got on the board early, as Thomas Murmann scored with 31:34 left until intermission to give St. Marys the 1-0 lead.
Dutchman Mike Fox made the score 2-0 when his shot went off the leg of a defender into the goal with 27:26 left in the half.
With 15:35 left in the half, Fox scored with a shot from the top of the box to give the Dutch the 3-0 lead at halftime.
The second half was similar to the first, only it was the Falcons dominating play.
Coudersport had 10 shots on goal to the Dutchmen’s two in the second 40 minutes of play. The Falcons also had five corner kicks.
Around the 32-minute mark, the Falcons had a corner kick go just over the goal. With 25:21 remaining in the game, a Coudersport corner kick deflected off the Dutch keeper into the goal, making the score 3-1.
With 11:17 left in the game, the Falcons were able to score off a header, making the score 3-2. Neither team scored the remainder of the game, as the Dutch held on for the 3-2 victory.
“It was a tale of two halves,” said St. Marys coach Russ Micale. “It was all us in the first half and all them in the second half. Fortunately for us we scored three in the first half.”
“It was Senior Night and it was great to win for the seniors. The seniors played well and the underclassmen stepped it up to make sure we came out on top,” added Micale.
The Dutch will close out their regular season on Saturday when they travel to Ridgway to take on the Elkers at 10 a.m.
