Geraldine “Jerry” M. Grumley, 87, of 204 Jefferson Ave., Ridgway, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Elk Regional Health Center following an illness of several months.
She was born Feb. 16, 1926, in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Elmer and Ruth Wicks Nelson. On July 26, 1947, she married Thomas M. Grumley, who preceded her in death on April 17, 2012. They were a perfect match.
Jerry was a 1943 graduate of Ridgway High School. Aside from attending airline school in Kansas, and working for the airlines until 1945, she was a lifelong resident of Ridgway. In 1991, after 19 years of employment , she retired from Pure Carbon, where she was fondly called “Grandma.” Prior to this, she worked for three years at Sylvania in Emporium. Jerry was an accomplished pianist who loved music from Benny Goodman to Keith Richards, she was an animal and bird lover, and she was an avid cookbook collector. She was a Cub Scout den mother and Brownie troop leader, and during the 1960s she enjoyed spending the summer months camping at Twin Lakes. Her husband, children and grandchildren were most important to her, and she was loving, caring and always had a positive outlook.
Jerry is survived by three children, Thomas M. Grumley Jr., of Ventnor, N.J., Marsha Luchs of Ridgway, and Susan Grumley of Ridgway; and four grandchildren, Avril Rae Malott of Klamouth Falls, Ore., and Sean Luchs, Amber Luchs and Thomas Luchs, all of Ridgway.
A memorial service for Geraldine “Jerry” M. Grumley will be held at the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home today, Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11 am. Officiating will be the Rev. Roger Peterson, pastor, of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
