KERSEY - The Elk County Catholic Crusader soccer team closed out their regular season Thursday night by defeating the Brockway Rovers 1-0 in a match played at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Kersey.
The two team played to a 0-0 tie in the first 30 minutes of play.
Each team had two shots on goal. Brockway had two corner kicks to Elk’s one.
Neither team took control in the first half of play, moving the ball back and forth in the middle of the field for the most part.
The second half saw Elk Catholic outshoot Brockway by a 6-5 margin. The Rovers had two corner kicks to none for the Crusaders.
The lone goal of the game came with 10:57 left in the match, when Elk Catholic’s Ryan Jacobs scored from the right side to give Elk the 1-0 lead.
Brockway had a few shots go over the goal in the closing minutes of the 60-minute contest, but none hit the mark as the Crusaders registered the 1-0 victory.
The Crusaders will enter the District 9 Class A playoffs as the fourth seed. They will open play in the Class A tournament by hosting fifth seed Coudersport next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Kersey. This will be the second game of a doubleheader, as the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch, the fourth seed in the girls’ District 9-AA tournament, will host the fifth-seeded Clarion Lady Bobcats at 5 p.m.
The Rovers will enter the boys’ Class A tournament as the third seed and will host Forest, the sixth seed, next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway.
