Evelyn Jean Checco, 75, of Avella, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 at home.
She was born April 27, 1935 in Avella, daughter of the late Angelo and Ella Mucci Bogo. In November 1974, she married James J. Checco, who survives.
Mrs. Checco attended Avella Grade School and was a 1954 graduate of St. Marys Area High School. She attended Grace Down's Airline School in New York City in 1955, Irene's Beauty School in 1959, and the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy in 1962.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Checco was employed by Flying Tiger Airlines from 1955 to 1958, which enabled her to travel twice around the world. She served as a teacher and director for the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy in Charleroi, was later employed by Kaufmann's Adoria Salon in Pittsburgh from 1968 to 1972 and was a self-employed beautician in Avella. She participated as a hairstylist for several New York runway shows and competitions.
She was a member of St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church in Avella and the church's Altar Society, serving as past president; and a member of the Avella American Legion's Women's Auxiliary. She was also an artist who enjoyed drawing and painting.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Lela Checco of Imperial; two stepdaughters, Vonnie (Robert) Rosales of Scottsdale, AZ and Cindy (Bob) Poplas of Monessen; two brothers, Lawrence (Betty) Bogo of Avella and Eugene Seiber of Washington; five step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Angeline Ondrick.
Services for Evelyn Jean Checco will be held at a location near her hometown.
