Gerald F. Gahr, 74, of 104 Evers Avenue, died on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at his home after an illness of the past several months.
He was born on February 26, 1939 in Kersey, son of the late Edwin and Agnes Heigle Gahr Sr.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated in 1957 from the Kersey High School.
On July 4, 1959, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Patricia A. Grunthaner, who survives.
He was employed at Stackpole Corporation for 28 years and at Oak manor for six years. After eight years working at MexAmerica Foods Inc. he retired in 2004. He volunteered at the Special Olympics, the Big Brother Program, and at the Elk County Recycling Center. He was a self-taught artist and enjoyed painting and being around people.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Debbie Lion and her husband Leon of St. Marys, Christine Nichols and her husband Ray of Brockway, and Lori Merritt and her husband Dan of Kersey; and a son, Scott T. Gahr and his wife Wanda of Keyser, W. Va. He was "Boompa" to his eight grandchildren, Adam, Tom, and Nathan Lion; Janelle Nichols; Eric and Brian Merritt; and Tyler and Jeremy Gahr. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Vollmer and her husband Dennis of St. Marys; and two brothers, Edwin Gahr Jr. and his wife Rita, and Joseph Gahr and his wife Mary, both of Kersey; and nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons in infancy; a grandson, Matthew Nicholas in 2007; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Sidelinger; a brother, William Gahr; a brother-in-law, Charles Sidelinger; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry "Speed" and Gerturde "Midge" Grunthaner.
A private funeral service for Gerald F. Gahr will be held at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday with the Reverend Paul Fields officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 18, from 5-8 p.m. at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home.
