CDBG funding revealed

During Monday's St. Marys City Council meeting, a brief public hearing was held as part of the 2011 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Tina Gradizzi, community and economic development coordinator, announced that this year's projects consist of street reconstruction and improvements. The CDBG Entitlement Program helps to financially assist municipalities with numerous community development needs and principally benefits low- and moderate-income citizens. As part of the application process, the first public hearing was held Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, with a second hearing following on Jan. 3, 2011."After our second hearing, we were unaware of the future of the CDBG Program," Gradizzi said. "On Friday, Aug. 26, we received notice of our 2011 allocation in the amount of $326,731."Of that funding, $58,800 will be set aside to allot for 18 percent to cover administration costs as in the past. This leaves $267,931 for use on street reconstruction and improvements. On Sept. 7, 2011, a final hearing was held identifying the projects to be undertaken utilizing the city's CDBG allotment. The application will be on display until September 28, 2011 and is due by the 30th. According to Gradizzi, the city's 2011 allocation is down eight percent from last year. In 2006, the city received $524,000 as part of the CDBG program. "The allocation has been steadily dropping, which was expected," Gradizzi said. "I'm still happy to have the CDBG program."
