Council seeks new equipment

City Council approved to reject all snow removal bids during their Monday evening worksession. The bids were for work on the parking garage and four city parking lots located on Depot, Brusselles, Market and N. St. Marys streets. Bids submitted were from Denny Anders Excavating in the amount of $58,600, Krug Contracting totaling $138,200 and Kevin Auman Land Improvement Services totaling $416,000.Councilman Dick Dornisch questioned why there was a the vast difference in bid amounts. City Manager Dave Greene said Auman contacted the city, informing them that his bid included an extra season and that his bid should be half his submitted amount. In rejecting the bids Council approved to transfer funds to the street department as part of the capital equipment budget in order to purchase a skid steer, which would allow the street department crew to perform all snow-removing tasks within the city."We feel we can do it cheaper," Greene said. "With the city doing it, we have better control of when snow would be removed."The $35,000 skid steer may be utilized year-round. Funding for the equipment is being transferred from funds alloted to tar and chip local roads, which was not completed this year.Greene added the skid steer is available from a Kane dealership.
