DuBois Beavers hand Dutch 27-12 non-league setback

DuBOIS - The DuBois Area Beavers handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 27-12 non-league setback last night at the E.J. Mansell Stadium in DuBois.While the Dutch scored the first points of the contest, the Beavers came back with 14 in the second quarter and outscored St. Marys 7-6 in the third period for a 21-12 lead. DuBois added a touchdown in the fourth quarter, making the score 27-12.“We played very well. We played hard with emotion and enthusiasm,” said Dutch coach Joe Schlimm. “DuBois has a nice ball club. I thought our guys hung in there for most of the night.”“We had our opportunities,” Schlimm added. “We played a good game. Now we have to prepare for the next four weeks and get ourselves in a playoff championship.” The Dutch offense was led by quarterback Justin Quiggle with 73 yards on 14 carries. Sam Guido had 54 yards on four carries and Alex Feldbauer finished with 52 yards on 12 carries.DuBois was led by Garrett Brown with 173 yards on 15 carries. Quarterback Sam Sleigh was 13 of 22 for 186 yards and two touchdowns.DuBois took the opening kickoff after the Dutch won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Beavers were forced to punt on their first possession, with St. Marys taking over on the DuBois 44.Cody Baker gained two yards to the 42. Brian Merritt picked up 11 to the 31 and a first down. Luchini gained two yards to the 29. Quiggle gained 11 to the 18. Baker was thrown for a three-yard loss on first down. On second down, Quiggle hit Jimmy Werner in the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown pass as the Dutch took the 6-0 lead. The PAT failed with 8:57 left in the first period.Each team punted on their next possession. St. Marys started on the 50 and moved to the 19 as the first period ended. The Dutch ran out of downs on the DuBois 15. It took DuBois nine plays to go 85 yards, with Joey Morrison scoring from two yards out to knot the game at 6-all. Gabriel Hrecznyj kicked the PAT as DuBois led 7-6 with 8:42 left until halftime.The Dutch punted on their next possession, with DuBois taking over on the Dutchmen’s 44 after a 15-yard illegal block penalty. Six plays later, Sleigh hit Garrett Miles with a 14-yard scoring pass as the Beavers took a 14-6 lead on Hrecznyj’s PAT with 4:26 left in the half. The Dutch moved from their own 25 to the DuBois 45 as the first half ended with DuBois on top 14-6.St. Marys was forced to punt on their first possession of the second half. DuBois moved to the Dutch 24-yard line. The St. Marys defense halted their drive on downs as the Dutch took over on their own 24. Feldbauer gained a yard to the 25. Luchini was thrown for a four-yard loss. Quiggle connected with Luchini on a 26-yard pass play out to the St. Marys 47. Feldbauer gained seven yards to the Beavers’ 46. On second down, Guido broke free on a 46-yard scoring scamper as the Dutch cut the DuBois lead to 14-12 with 5:22 left, as the try for two failed.DuBois came right back with a scoring drive of their own. Sleigh found Miles on a 52-yard pass play, making the score 20-12 as Hrecznyj’s PAT made it 21-12 with 3:45 left in the third quarter. The Dutch moved from their own 38 to the DuBois 34 as the third period ended. An incomplete pass on fourth down gave the Beavers the ball. Eight plays later, Brown scored on a 16-yard run as DuBois took a 27-12 lead, as Guido blocked Hrecznyj’s PAT with 9:15 left in the game.The Dutch started from their own 25-yard line after the five-yard return by Guido. Feldbauer gained five to the 30, with Guido losing two on second down. Quiggle gained nine to the 37 and a first down. Luchini gained six with Feldbauer picking up 11 on the next two plays for a first down. Luchini gained five and Feldbauer six with a first down at the DuBois 35. Feldbauer gained two on first down and lost two on second down. He gained five on third down to the 30, making it fourth and five. A motion penalty on St. Marys moved it back to the 35. Quiggle gained seven to the 28, but it wasn’t enough for the first down as the Beavers took over on downs.DuBois was forced to punt on their next possession, with the Dutch taking over on their own 27.
