Dutch soccer team closes out regular season with win over Ridgway

St. Marys boys' soccer finished its regular season with an 8-1 win over Ridgway Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School. This was the regular season finale for the Dutch and St. Marys closed the season with its second victory over Ridgway this season and third overall win in a row. "We finished strong with three wins in a row," St. Marys head coach Russ Micale said. "We need to keep that and carry it over into the playoffs, whenever that is and whoever we're playing against." Nathan Hansen, Ryan Uhl and Gideon Woelfel scored within the first 17 minutes to put the Dutch ahead 3-0. Woelfel added his second goal as he broke by the Ridgway defense with 4:34 left in the opening half to propel St. Marys to a 4-0 lead. During the first half, St. Marys had most of the possession and kept the ball on the Elkers' half of the field, creating scoring opportunities. The Dutch took that 4-0 lead into halftime, but the Elkers were the first to score after the intermission. After Ridgway had won a corner kick, Aaron Sorge headed the ball into the right side of the goal with 37:36 remaining to cut the margin to 4-1. St. Marys responded as Uhl tallied his second goal by scoring on a header with just over 33 minutes left to build the lead to 5-1. Hansen followed by notching his second goal with 28:50 left for St. Marys' sixth goal.Matt Hoffman booted in a goal with 26:38 left to up the Dutch advantage to 7-1. Nick Keller rounded out the scoring with a goal with 9:34 left in the game. Micale said the game gave the players a chance to play different positions and see the game from a different perspective. "I'm glad the kids played well; they had the opportunity to play a couple of different positions to get them out of their element a little bit and experience what the other guys are doing," Micale said. Ridgway hosts Johnsonburg at 4 p.m. Tuesday, while St. Marys finished their regular season with a 13-3-2 mark.
