Dutchmen advance to 9-AAA finals with 50-23 win

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team advanced to the District 9 Class AAA championship game by defeating the Clearfield Bisons by a 50-23 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.The Dutchmen will meet the Bradford Owls at a time and site to be announced by the District 9 basketball committee. Bradford edged the Punxsutawney Chucks by a 41-38 score in overtime. That game was played at Punxsutawney.Last night’s game at the Dutch Oven started out rather slowly as the Bisons held an 8-6 lead after the first eight minutes of play. The Dutch defense forced nine Clearfield turnovers in the second quarter as St. Marys outscored the Bisons 19-5 in the second quarter to take a 25-13 halftime lead.“The second quarter was the key. We really built upon the second quarter and kept our defensive pressure up and it got to them (Clearfield),” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido.“Ryan Hockman had a nice game for us coming off the bench. He had eight assists and took control of the basketball. He helped stretch our lead from one point to 12.“I was glad to have a game instead of waiting two weeks to play. I’d rather be playing than sitting.”When asked which opponent he would like to see in the finals, Guido remarked, “It doesn’t matter. When we find out we’ll get prepared.”The Dutch offense was led by Justin Quiggle with 15 points on three twos and three threes. Jimmy Werner scored 12 points on five field goals and a two-for-two night from the foul line.Robbie Myers led Clearfield with 10 points on two twos, one three and a three-for-four night from the foul line. Jack Mellgard was next with five points.Mellgard opened the contest with a three-pointer with 6:17 left in the first period. Quiggle got the Dutch on the board at the 5:28 mark. Ryan Uhl added a field goal, giving St. Marys the 4-3 lead. Curtis Frye scored for Clearfield with Jordan Weinzierl answering for the Dutch. Myers hit a three at the buzzer to give Clearfield the 8-6 lead after one period.Quiggle hit a three and Dylan Reigel added a foul shot for the Dutch, 10-8. Myers tied the game on a putback. Ryan Mancuso scored for St. Marys, 12-10, with Myers making it 12-11 with a foul shot. The Dutch went on a 9-0 run as Hockman hit a two, Quiggle a three and Werner a field goal and two foul shots. Myers scored again for Clearfield before Uhl and Werner hit field goals, giving St. Marys the 25-13 halftime lead.The Dutch opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run as Mancuso, Quiggle and Werner hit twos, Quiggle a three and Reigel a two, 36-13. Frye and Andrew Redden scored for the Bisons, 36-17. Quiggle and Vollmer scored field goals to give the Dutch the 40-17 lead after three quarters.Mancuso and Mellgard traded buckets to open the second half, as did Werner and Redden, 44-21. Mancuso, Werner and Weinzierl scored to give the Dutch the 50-21 lead.
